THE SOUTHERN COMMAND GOLD TROPHY (GR.III)

This race was instituted in the name of Southern Command, Pune which was first run on 4th September 1948, as “Southern Command Cup”. This race has established itself as one of the few races, which is open to horses which are 3 year olds and over. It continues to be an important graded race and carries Grade 3 status.
 

During its inaugural running this race was for horses in Class II and III, over a distance of one and a half miles and attracted a field of 9 runners. It was won by “JANE-JIGAR” owned by M/s. Chandulal J. Shah and M. H. Ahmedbhoy, trained by A. L. J. Talib and ridden by Kheem Singh. The winner’s stake was Rs.8915/-.
 

This race was a listed race in the year 1986. Subsequently, this race achieved Graded status in the year 1999.
 

Traditionally, the Royal Western India Turf Club, Ltd. is honoured by the presence of GOC-in-Chief, Southern Command and Officer, Headquarters, Southern Command, with their families on this race day and the GOC-in-Chief presents the trophy to the winner. This tradition has been carried on by the RWITC, Ltd. and as always, reflects the cordial relationship shared with the Army which is a matter of great pride to the RWITC, Ltd.
