ADDITIONAL REPORTS :

REENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “ZENON” (A.SANDESH, DR.3) IN RACE NO.60 – THE RAJARAM CHHATRAPATI TROPHY (1800 METRES) RUN ON 24TH AUGUST, 2018 :

The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer Vishal Gaikwad and Jockey A.Sandesh in the above connection. T0rainer Vishal Gaikwad said that ZENON was earlier trained by Mr.P.Shroff and came to his charge in the month of April, 2018. He said that he had instructed the Jockey to take a jump, don’t wait for anyone, go to the front and to do his best.  Also, he had asked the Jockey to carry the whip in his left hand so that he could correct the horse in case he goes out after jump out.

Jockey A.Sandesh said that he was instructed to go to the front and not to slow the pace. Also, the trainer had told him not to let ZANARA to go to the front. He said that ZENON was not quick out of the gates and hence he had to niggle at him and then went to the front and ZANARA was on his haunches.

Trainer Vishal Gaikwad confirmed the Jockey’s statement and added that when the horse jumped out, the Jockey has taken a call. He said that when he was questioned before the race by the Stipes about his instructions, he had said the same thing.

The video recording of Race No.60 was viewed.

To a specific question, Jockey A.Sandesh stated that he had ridden the horse earlier in The Indian Derby (Gr.I) as well as the Bangalore Derby (Gr.I). He said that in the race in question, the horse wobbled in the last furlong, as such he could not ride him out and that he had reported the same to the stipes after the race.

Trainer Vishal Gaikwad said that the horse has a bleeding issue and two weeks prior to this race when he went for his first pace work, he had coughed thrice, hence they had got the horse scoped by Dr.Khambatta and he was found to be EIPH Gr.II after which he had taken all precautions of monitoring his water intake. He said that Jockey A.Sandesh went to the front as instructed but due to ZANARA (Neeraj Rawal) sticking to him all the time, the pace was a bit too fast for the first 5 to 6 furlongs, therefore, being a bleeder earlier, he bled in this race as well. He said that after the race the horse was scoped by the Club’s Vet and found to be EIPH Gr.III

Having considered the submissions made, scrutinizing the Work and Medication Log Books  and having viewed the video tape recording of the race, the matter has been reported to the Stewards for such action as they deem fit.

The Stewards of the Club at their meeting held on Sunday, 16th September, 2018 interviewed Trainer Vishal Gaikwad and Jockey A.Sandesh in the above connection and having heard them and having viewed the video recording of Race No.60, the Stewards of the Club were not entirely satisfied with the explanation tendered by Jockey A.Sandesh.  In that, whilst the Stewards appreciated that he rode the horse, ZENON, as per his instructions, however, he was advised that in future he should also use his own judgement depending on the run of the race so as to give his mount a fair opportunity to obtain the best possible Place in the field.

Further, whilst the Stewards of the Club noted the explanation tendered by Trainer Vishal Gaikwad, he was advised that the instructions given by him should ensure that his charge is given a fair opportunity to obtain the best Placing in the race if the circumstances of the race change or don’t go according to plan.

RE: ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “MONTANA” IN RACE NO.11 – THE DOUBLE BULL PLATE (DIV.II) - RUN ON 26TH JULY, 2018 :

The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer Faisal A.Abbas and Apprentice K.Nazil in the above connection. Trainer Faisal A.Abbas said that he had instructed the Jockey to take a good jump and sit well up and coming into the straight to do his best. It was pointed out to Tr.Faisal A.Abbas that after the race his owner was unhappy with the Jockey’s riding. On being asked for his views, Tr.Faisal A.Abbas said that he was not happy with the Jockey’s positioning of the  filly in the early part of the race. On being questioned regarding the choice of the rider, he said that MONTANA was carrying top weight, as such he wanted to claim an allowance so as to give the filly the best opportunity and declared App.K.Nazil. On being questioned regarding the difference in the filly’s body weight, Tr.Faisal A.Abbas said that in her last run during the Mumbai Meeting 2017/18 i.e. Race No.303 the filly weighed 422 kg. and in the race in question i.e. Race No.11 she weighed 438 kg. i.e. 16 kg. more. When asked to explain the work pattern, he said that the filly has had three work outs from end of June, 2018 till date, once she went pace work in the company of RIO DE JANERIO and twice with ROYAL ACE. He said that the filly had worked well and based on her performance in her last run in Mumbai in Race No.303 and considering that she was looking well and  had worked well, he had fancied her in Race No.11. On being asked for the reason for the filly’s poor performance in Race No.11, Tr.Faisal A.Abbas stated that the filly was still a maiden having raced thrice in Mumbai and this was the first time she ra0ced in Pune carrying top weight of 61 kg. When asked as to the future plan for this filly, Tr.Faisal A.Abbas said that he intends to race her next in a higher class so as to carry lesser weight and maybe over a mile.

Apprentice K.Nazil confirmed the instructions and added that the filly took a level jump, however, she lacked early speed. He said that soon after the start ANGEL COIN (S.G.Prasad) went across him despite which he continued niggling at the filly, however, she was shying away due to the kickback but he continued tapping her to get into position. At this stage, it was pointed out to App.K.Nazil that the filly was sporting Pacifiers in this race and that on being questioned immediately after the race, he had not mentioned about the kickback and this could be an after thought. To a query, App.K.Nazil said that he has had 17 winners out of which he had 9 winners during the last Mumbai Meeting. When asked whether he had worked the filly prior to this race, App.K.Nazil replied in the negative.  Trainer Faisal A.Abbas confirmed this statement.

The video recording of Race No.11 was viewed and when asked Apprentice K.Nazil explained his riding as mentioned by him above.

Thereafter, the video recording of Race No.303 (Mumbai Meeting 2017/18) was viewed.

On going through the betting sheets, it was observed that there was no fluctuation in the odds. Having considered the submissions made, scrutinizing the Log Books and having viewed the video tape recording of the race in question as also the filly’s previous race i.e. Race No.303 run during the Mumbai Meeting 2017/18 the Stipendiary Stewards feelt that the Jockey has ridden out the horse. However, keeping in mind that the owner was unhappy with the Jockey’s riding, the matter was reported to the Stewards for such action as deemed fit.

The Stewards of the Club at their meeting held on Sunday, 16th September, 2018 considered the above report and having viewed the video recording of the race and having deliberated the matter, the explanation tendered by the Trainer and Jockey was noted.

RE: ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “ROYAL ACE” IN RACE NO.15 – THE DOUBLE BULL PLATE (DIV.I) - RUN ON 26TH JULY, 2018 :

The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer Faisal A.Abbas and Apprentice K.Nazil in the above connection. Trainer Faisal A.Abbas said that ROYAL ACE is a 6-year-old and was still a maiden. He said that he had prepared the horse for this race by giving him sufficient workouts and he gave him the best chance by racing him in the lower class and claiming an allowance. He said that he had instructed App.K.Nazil to sit well up and to do his best. Also, he had told the Apprentice to keep the whip in his left hand since the horse has a tendency to shift out.

Trainer Faisal A.Abbas said that after the race, Apprentice K.Nazil informed him that he sat up but the pace was too fast and ROYAL ACE was one paced horse, therefore, he has now decided to race him over a longer trip next time out because may be that will suit him better.

App.K.Nazil confirmed the instructions and added that he had followed the instructions and did his best.

The video recording of Race No.15 was viewed.

On going through the betting sheets, it was observed that there was no drift in the odds on ROYAL ACE. Having considered the submissions made, scrutinizing the Log Books and having viewed the video tape recording of the race, we feel that App.K.Zazil has followed the instructions and ridden out the horse.

However, the Stipes we wish to bring to the attention of the Stewards that Trainer Faisal A.Abbas had three failed favourites on 26th July, 2018 viz. MONTANA in Race No.11, SOUTHPAW in Race No.13 and ROYAL ACE in the race in question.

In view of the above, the matter was reported to the Stewards for such action as they deem fit as again such incidents bring racing to disrepute.

The Stewards of the Club at their meeting held on Sunday, 16th September, 2018 considered the above report and having viewed the video recording of the race and having deliberated the matter, the explanation tendered by the Trainer and Jockey was noted.

RE: ENQUIRY INTO THE RIDING OF APPRENTICE K.NAZIL ON “OSPREY ARROW” IN RACE NO.50 – THE TRUE ELEGANCE PLATE (DIV.I) - RUN ON 15TH AUGUST, 2018 :

For the information of the Stewards immediately after the race Trainer Sangramsinh N.Joshi had lodged a verbal complaint that he was unhappy with the riding of App.K.Nazil on OSPREY ARROW.

Trainer Sangramsinh N.Joshi and Apprentice K.Nazil were subsequently questioned on 17th August, 2018 in the above connection.

Trainer Sangramsinh N.Joshi said that he had instructed App.K.Nazil to take a good jump and sit in a forward position and to do his best in the straight. Also, he had told the Jockey that if he finds himself in 1st/2nd position then do not gag the filly. App.K.Nazil confirmed the instructions and added that since the trainer had informed that the filly has a tendency of throwing her head up, he jumped out on long reins and thereafter niggled at the filly and since she had taken a good jump and was travelling well, he settled her and sat and there were two horses in front and when a gap opened up he niggled at the filly to take the gap but the filly did not respond, as such he shifted her out in order to show her daylight at the 3 furlongs and started to ride her. Thereafter, coming into the straight the filly was inclined outwards, hence he kept pushing and used the whip on the left due to which the filly shifted inwards. He said that despite the filly shifting in, there was a gap in front which he tried to take but the filly was unable to do so and when he used the whip again from the left, the filly further shifted in and he rode out the filly till the post.

The video recording of the race was viewed and when asked for his observation of the race, Tr.Sangramsinh N.Joshi said that after jump App.K.Nazil could have sat in a better position but he did not make any effort to do so. He said that on being questioned after the race, App.K.Nazil informed him that the filly took a good jump and he felt that he was in a good position, as such, he sat.  Further, when he questioned the Apprentice about his riding in the straight, 0specifically with regard to him shifting in and out, App.K.Nazil had informed him the filly was inclined outwards, hence he kept pushing and used the whip on the left due to which the filly shifted inwards and that despite the filly shifting in he had tried to take the gap which opened in front but the filly was unable to do so and when he used the whip again from the left, the filly further shifted in. Tr.Sangramsinh N.Joshi expressed his dissatisfaction with the riding of App.K.Nazil. He also pointed out that the hesitant manner in which App.K.Nazil had used the whip was questionable and she was the fastest moving horse in the straight.

To a specific question, App.K.Nazil stated that since the filly  shifted out at the top of the straight hence he switched the whip to the left and thereafter he did not change his whip hand as he was apprehensive that she may shift out again. Trainer Sangramsinh N.Joshi interjected to say that the filly had not shifted out at the top of the straight but App.K.Nazil had taken her out.

Having heard the submissions made by the Trainer and Jockey and having viewed the video recording of the race, the Stipendiary Stewards are not satisfied  with the explanation tendered by App.K.Nazil and keeping in mind that the trainer was also not satisfied with the riding, App.K.Nazil was reported to the Stewards for not following the Trainer’s instructions thereby riding an unsatisfactory race.

The Stewards of the Club at their meeting held on Sunday, 16th September, 2018 interviewed Trainer Sangramsinh N.Joshi and App.K.Nazil in the above connection and having heard the submissions made, having viewed the video recording of Race No.50 and having deliberated the matter, the Stewards of the Club were not satisfied with the

explanation tendered by App.K.Nazil and held him guilty of improper riding and not following the Trainer’s instructions. In that, he was instructed to sit in a forward position and if he found himself in 1st/2nd position then not to gag the filly but ride his race from there and to do his best in the straight. Having taken a good start, App.K.Nazil had the opportunity to sit in a forward position as instructed which he failed to do and coming into the straight he unnecessarily used the whip on the left and shifted in thus losing ground and he was not vigorous in your riding effort. Therefore, the Stewards of the Club decided to suspend his Apprentice Jockey’s license for 2 Race Days i.e. from 5th October, 2018 to 6th October, 2018 (both days inclusive) (permitted to ride work/mock race) .

RE: ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “SO SPLENDID” (AKSHAY , DR.1) IN RACE NO.53 – THE BRUNELLO PLATE (1200 METRES) RUN ON 19TH AUGUST, 2018 :

The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer Vishal Gaikwad and Jockey Akshay in the above connection.

Trainer Vishal Gaikwad said that he had told the Jockey that this horse probably needs ground and he should jump out decently and ride his own race and do his best. Also, keeping in mind that at work this horse is a hesitant and chicken hearted when he works in company of other horses, he had told the Jockey to assess during the race whether this horse needed Blinkers.  He added that due to the horse’s hesitant nature, he had got his back x-rayed in Mumbai just to rule out any problems but it revealed nothing. He felt that this horse lacks confidence.

The video recording of Race No.53 was viewed and it was pointed out to him that Jockey Akshay was lacking in his riding efforts in the straight. Trainer Vishal Gaikwad concurred with the Stipes view and added that after the race he  had admonished the Jockey for the same. He said that Jockey Akshay works for him part-time on salary basis and he gives him rides occasionally and cannot give him more rides due to his level of competence.

Jockey Akshay confirmed the instructions and stated that his horse was nervous and scarred and the moment horses came alongside he would drop his bit and fall back. Jockey Akshay was reminded that he had not reported this behavior of the horse after the race. When asked as to why he was hesitant to use the whip when the horse had responded to it in the straight, Jockey Akshay reiterated that the horse was nervous.

Having considered the submissions made and having viewed the video tape recording of the race, the Stipendiary Stewards were not satisfied with the explanation tendered by Jockey Akshay and held him guilty of not being vigorous in his riding efforts in the straight.. However, considering that the horse was at long odds, they decided to suspend his Jockey’s license for only 2 Race Days i.e. from 5th October 2018 to 6th October, 2018 (both days inclusive) (permitted to ride work/mock race) for indifferent riding.

Further, the Stipendiary Stewards were also not entirely satisfied with the explanation tendered by Tr.Vishal Gaikwad and decided to severely reprimand him for using the race to educate his horse.
