RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “ROCHESTER” IN RACE NO 161 - THE MID DAY TROPHY  - RUN ON 12th FEBRUARY 2017 :

Trainer S. K. Sunderji was questioned on 16th February, 2017 in the above connection. The video of the race was viewed and when questioned, Tr. S. K. Sunderji said that the horse was drawn-11 and he had instructed the Jockey to take a nice jump and sit in 4th/5th position, coming round the turn and into the straight to improve his position and do his best. When asked for his observation of the race, Tr. S. K. Sunderji said that the Jockey had failed to position himself from the word go thereby he had misjudged the race totally which cost him the race and Jockey P. Trevor himself told him after the race that he could have won this race. When asked to narrate what the Jockey had informed him after the race, Trainer S. K. Sunderji said that the Jockey told him that initially Jockey Neeraj Rawal (DAFFODIL) kept troubling him and hence he had to switch the horse on the inside and in the straight, the horse hung in or else he would have won the race. To a specific question, Tr. Sunderji said that not only in the straight but in the entire race if you make one mistake, it can cost you the race and in the race in question, from the word go, Jockey P. Trevor was not in a striking range which put him in a difficult position throughout the race.

The video of the race was viewed and Trainer S. K. Sunderji pointed out that soon after the start, there was no effort from the Jockey to get into position and thereby he had put himself and the horse under immense pressure and the horse is bound to hang under pressure.

On being asked about his views on the Jockey’s riding in the straight, Trainer S. K. Sunderji said that he was unable to understand why the Jockey had the reins in one hand and this could be best explained by the Jockey. He added that he does not doubt the integrity of the boy, however, he had not followed his instructions from the word go. He said that the horse had come back sound.

Since Jockey P. Trevor was out of station, he was questioned subsequently on 26th February, 2017 in the presence of Trainer S. K. Sunderji. Trainer S. K. Sunderji’s statement was read out to Jockey P. Trevor.

The video recording of Race No.161 was viewed and when questioned, Jockey P. Trevor said that he was instructed to sit in 4th/5th position and to do his best. He said that on jump out the saddle on his mount slipped back slightly hence he looked down to check the saddle and in doing so may have lost a couple of strides. Thereafter, Jockey Neeraj Rawal on DAFFODIL was running erratic and pushed him out on 2 or 3 occasions, therefore, he held back and switched to the inside. Thereafter, rounding the bend he started niggling at the horse and coming into the straight the horse started hanging in very badly. He said that immediately after the race he had informed the Assistant Stipe, Mr. Kuleshwar Singh and the trainer about the saddle slip.  When asked as to why he did not attempt to take the gap about 100 metres from the start, Jockey P. Trevor said that the gap was insufficient for him to go through

When asked, Trainer S. K. Sunderji confirmed that Jockey P. Trevor did mention to him that the saddle had slipped slightly, probably 1 to 1½ inch, which according to the Jockey had not made difference to the running of the race. He said that he had missed mentioning this to the Stipendiary Stewards when he was questioned earlier, however, the Jockey had not mentioned to him that he had looked down to check the saddle.

Having heard the submissions made by the Trainer and Jockey and having viewed the video recording of the race, it was observed that after jump out the Jockey had looked down presumably to check his saddle which may have cost him a few strides and in the straight the horse hung in. However, the matter was reported to the Stewards for such action as deemed fit.

The Stewards of the Club at their meeting held on 19th March, 2017 interviewed Trainer S. K. Sunderji and Jockey P. Trevor and having heard the submissions made and viewing the video recording of the race, decided that no action was called for in this matter.

RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “BE BOLD” IN RACE NO 163 - THE DR.JAGJIT SINGH TRIBUTE SALVER  - RUN ON 12th FEBRUARY 2017 :

Trainer Faisal A. Abbas was questioned on 16th February, 2017 in the above connection. The video of the race was viewed and when questioned, Tr. Faisal A. Abbas said that Jockey P. Trevor had won on this horse in its previous start and he knows the horse. He said that he had instructed the Jockey to take a good jump and get into a good position (well up) and ride his own race from there. When asked for his observation of the race, Trainer Faisal A. Abbas said that the Jockey could not get into a good position as he was hampered a bit soon after the start and the pace was too fast. He said that after the race, Jockey P. Trevor had reported that in the straight when the horse was getting into his strides, he received an interference from the outside horse and if not for this interference he would have definitely run 2nd or 3rd. Further, when he had asked if the horse was good enough for this class, the Jockey had informed him that the horse was definitely good and also offered to ride him next time out. Trainer Faisal A. Abbas said that Jockey P. Trevor had also explained to him that because of the rough passage he was unable to do justice to his mount.

The video recording of the race was viewed and it was pointed out to Trainer Faisal A. Abbas that in the straight the outside horse (ADVANCE TO CONTACT) had not caused interference to BE BOLD, but on the contrary it was Jockey P. Trevor (BE BOLD) who had shifted out and caused interference to ADVANCE TO CONTACT.

The video recording of the horse’s previous run i.e. Race No.129 run over 1000 metres, was viewed and it was observed that in this race the horse was positioned well up.

Thereafter the video of Race No.163 was viewed again and having shown Jockey P. Trevor’s efforts on BE BOLD in the last 100 metres, Trainer Faisal A. Abbas was asked for his views, to which he replied that the Jockey was the best person to answer this question. On again being asked for his views, Trainer Faisal A. Abbas said that considering that the winner had opened up a gap of 4 to 5 lengths at that stage, at best, he would have finished 2nd or 3rd.

Since Jockey P. Trevor was out of station, he was questioned subsequently on 26th February, 2017 in the presence of Trainer Faisal A. Abbas. Trainer Faisal A. Abbas’ statement was read out to Jockey P. Trevor.

The video recording of Race No.163 was viewed and when questioned, Jockey P. Trevor said that he was instructed to sit in 4th/5th position and to do his best. He said that soon after the start  TRIPLE THREAT (App. M. Ayyar) cut across him whereby he had to steady his mount and thereafter the pace became too fast and he could not maintain his position and he kept niggling at the horse all the way and coming into the straight, he felt that the horse was not galloping on the inside and hence he pulled him out and that is when he went on to the other horse on his outside and he got unbalanced and in the last 100 metres two apprentice boys came too close to him as such he could not ride out and thereafter he did not have sufficient room.

The video recording of the horse’s previous run i.e. Race No.129 run over 1000 metres, was viewed and it was observed that in this race the horse was positioned well up. Jockey P. Trevor said that in this race the horse was on the outside all the way and he galloped better and that was the reason he had pulled his horse out in the straight in Race No.163.

Trainer Faisal A. Abbas pointed out that in Race No.129 the horse won in Class-V carrying 57 kg. and subsequently in Race No.163 he ran in Class-IV carrying 54 kg.

Having heard the submissions made by the Trainer and Jockey and having viewed the video of the race in question as also his previous run i.e. Race No.129, the Stipendiary Stewards are not satisfied with the explanation tendered by Jockey P. Trevor for the following reasons :

1.             Even conceding that the Jockey received slight interference soon after the start, however, thereafter he could have made more efforts to sit in the mid bunch as instructed instead of falling way back in the last bunch.

2.             Coming into the straight when the Jockey rightly pulled the horse out at the 2 furlongs, if he had started riding out vigorously at that stage, he would not have got into the traffic problem later on.

In view of the above, Jockey P. Trevor was reported to the Stewards for incompetent/injudicious riding.

The Stewards of the Club at their meeting held on 19th March, 2017 interviewed Trainer Faisal A. Abbas and Jockey P. Trevor and having heard the submissions made and viewing the video recording of the race and in view of the submissions made by Jockey P. Trevor, decided to give him the benefit of the doubt.

RACE NO.164 – THE KOKU – KIKA TROPHY (DIV.II) - RUN ON 12th FEBRUARY, 2017:

There was dual declaration in respect of Jockey P. Trevor in the above race i.e. by Trainer Imtiaz A. Sait on RELENTLESS PURSUIT and by Tr. Subhag Singh on ROYAL ECLAIR. On questioning, Jockey P. Trevor informed that he had confirmed the ride to Tr. Subhag Singh. Trainer Imtiaz A. Sait was informed of the same and he declared Jockey Suraj Narredu. However, before the first race of the day, Jockey Suraj Narredu informed that on going through the Declarations he realized that he was declared to ride RELENTLESS PURSUIT in this race and that he had immediately informed Trainer Imtiaz A. Sait his inability to ride this horse due to prior commitments. As such, Trainer Imtiaz A. Sait was permitted to declare Jockey Neeraj Rawal. After questioning all concerned, Trainer Imtiaz A. Sait has been fined Rs.3,000/- for his lapse.

RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “SLAM DUNK” IN RACE NO 164 - THE KOKU – KIKA TROPHY (DIV.II) - RUN ON 12th FEBRUARY 2017 :

The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer H. J. Antia and Jockey Hanumant Singh in the above connection. The video recording of the race was viewed and when questioned, Trainer H. J. Antia said that this was a 1400 metres race and considering that the horse was to travel 200 metres extra, he had instructed the Jockey to take a jump and settle him and give him a chance. He said that the horse has shown good form all through the season and in this race he finished one length behind AEOLUS MAXIMUS who thereafter won on 16th March, 2017. He said that subsequently SLAM DUNK won in Race No.223 on 16th March, 2017 over 1200 metres where he instructed the Jockey to take a jump and get into a good posisition and to do his best.

Jockey Hanumant Singh confirmed the instructions. When questioned regarding his riding efforts in both the races, he said that in Race No.164 the horse was hanging out badly and also he was hampered for a run on more than one occasion.

Having heard Trainer H. J. Antia and Jockey Hanumant Singh and having viewed the video recording of Race No.164 as also the horse’s subsequent run i.e. Race No.223, the explanation tendered by them was noted and the enquiry has been closed.

RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE COMPARATIVE PERFORMANCE OF “ELSA” (BHAWANI SINGH) IN RACE NO 181 THE ACRES CLUB TROPHY (1600 METRES) - RUN ON 23RD FEBRUARY, 2017 WHICH THE MARE WON AS COMPARED TO HER PREVIOUS RUN IN RACE NO.152 - THE SSHAAWN’S MILLION (1600 METRES) RIDDEN BY JOCKEY SANTOSH G. – RUN ON 5TH FEBRUARY, 2017 WHERE SHE WAS UNPLACED :

The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer Subhag Singh in the above connection. He was asked to explain the improvement of approximately 18 ¼ lengths shown by his charge ELSA vis-à-vis the common horse SUSSEX PRIDE in a span of 17 days. Trainer Subhag Singh said that this filly came to him from Trainer Faisal A. Abbas and raced under his charge from the start of the current Mumbai Meeting. He said that prior to Race No.152, the filly ran in Race No.119 over 1600 metres and before that race he had enquired about the mare from Jockey C. S. Jodha who has ridden her earlier and Jockey C. S. Jodha informed him that the mare races best from the front, she is hesitant to pass horses and does not like to come from behind and that was the reason he ran her in Class-IV over 1600 metres in Race No.119 so that she could go out to the front.  However, in that race the mare bolted with the Jockey and he was upset with him for not having judged the pace and because of that she blew up in the straight.  He said that in her next run i.e. Race No.152 on 5th February, 2017 he had declared Jockey Santosh G. and asked him to sit well up and to be cautious and not to allow the mare to bolt. Trainer Subhag Singh felt that in that race the Jockey was extra cautious and sat in 5th/6th position and the mare did not enjoy racing from that position despite the Jockey’s efforts.  He said that coming into this race, he had got Jockey Bhawani Singh to work the mare and had instructed him to jump and go to the front and try and control the pace and if NELSONS BLOOD goes to the front, not to cut pace with him but sit 2nd and to do his best. He said that as the horses jumped out, Jockey Bhawani Singh found himself in the front comfortably and was able to control the pace since it was a slow run race, due to which the mare sustained right to the end and managed to win under pressure.

Having heard the submissions made and viewing the video recording of the race in question as also the previous two runs of the mare i.e. Race No.119 and Race No.152 the Stipendiary Stewards were not satisfied with the explanation tendered by Trainer Subhag Singh. However, keeping in mind that there was negligible or no betting on both occasions, the Stipendiary Stewards decided to fine him only Rs.10,000/- for the marked improvement of about 18¼ lengths shown by his charge vis-à-vis the common horse SUSSEX PRIDE, in a span of 17 days.
