Core Group suggests norms to restrict numbers in Western India

The Core Group, constituted by the RWITC Committee to suggest ways and means to restrict the population of horses in Western India, has come up with preliminary recommendations. The Group consists of representation from the Committee, Owners, Trainers and the Officials.

It is clarified that the restrictions would apply only from the Mumbai Meeting 2011/12 and are NOT applicable for the Pune Meeting 2011.

The suggestions include restricting trainers lot sizes to 70, restricting 2 year olds for each trainer to 30% of their total string, putting a ceiling of 400 two year olds, fixing a ceiling on individual ownership at 66, new owners to be restricted to 5 horses in the first year, culling based on age and rating criteria, vet clearance for all arriving two year olds etc.

The RWITC has broadly accepted the ceiling on two year olds and ownership, though these will be confirmed once the Core Group finalises its recommendations after receiving further suggestions and/or amendments.

It is recommended to freeze the total horse population to about 1325.

The Core Group is expected to meet weekly to encourage horses to be moved out of Western India and to resolve the vexing problem of finding accommodation for the surplus horses (in the vicinity of 150) at the forthcoming Pune Meeting.
