The Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC), the premier horse racing club in the country , is set add a new chapter in Indian racing history by organising trials to race under lights at the Mahalaxmi racecourse on April 18 and 19.RWITC chairman Khushroo Dhunjibhoy informed TOI on Wednesday that they have even secured the title sponsors for the weekend. “Cambay Tigers will be our sponsors for the weekend and they will sponsor two races,“ informed Dhunjibhoy.

According to Dhunjibhoy , the club has a budget of Rs 15 lac to run the trials. “The illumination of the track will be from about 1200 metres to the finish and about 300 metres beyond that so as to enable horses to pull up after the race with ease. All other related areas covered to the race track and the enclosure will be illuminated, as also the pathway from the paddock up to the stables,“ added Dhunjibhoy.

With the last race of the trials scheduled at 8.15 pm, there seems no need to secure the state government's nod.“Maharashtra Government's license to race contains no time restrictions. The security will also be beefed up and we do not anticipate any issues as racing will end early ,“ stated Dhunjibhoy.

According to the chairman, there will be no issues for women staff working at the tote windows. “The staff will be permitted to leave soon after 8.15 p.m. and as trains are located adjacent to the race course, we anticipate no problem for the staff.“

RWITC's approach is likely to take care of everything and city race-goers and other visitors will be able to enjoy great evenings. “We are inviting several popular restaurants and bars to set up stalls with all kinds of cuisines both vegetarian and non vegetarian. We expect this to be a gala event where people of all ages including children are welcome. There will be a special children's play area with entertainment,“ informed Dhunjibhoy.

The Members Enclosure will also be open for public. “All areas will be open to the public including the Members Enclosure, where the dress code will be smart casual. Gates will open at 3 pm,“ stated Dhunjibhoy .
