Colm O'Donoghue to ride for Mr. Shapoor Mistry
By Tom Krish

Let us begin with some jockey news. I spoke to jockey ColmO’Donoghue Thursday afternoon. He confirmed he will be riding in India this winter.

“Yes, I will be in India and will be based in Mumbai. Mr.Shapoor Mistry has retained me. I have enjoyed my visits to India. I am excited about riding for Mr Mistry and I may mention that Diabolical, my 2007 Indian Derby winner, was bred in the Manjri Stud Farm.  I believe that I will get good mounts from Mr Mistry’s stable and I consider it a privilege to be riding for one of India’s top breeders, “  O’Donoghue said.

Jockey O’Donoghue continued. “I will not be at Santa Anita for the Breeders’ Cup. I ride Jacobean in the Racing Post Trophy in England on Saturday. I do not know when I’ll arrive in India.”

I mentioned to Colm that this story can be read in the R W I T C website. The Club should be happy that their site has a following abroad. I am doing my part.

Gary Stevens, winner of over 5,000 races and a Hall Of Fame jockey, has not been riding since early July. The 51 year-old Stevens has undergone a knee replacement procedure. Stevens will have a ride in the Breeders’ Cup. He will be aboard Sivoliere in the Juvenile Fillies Turf on October 31. Jockey Stevens has 10 BC winners in his career.

In 2013, Gary Stevens won the Distaff with Beholder. He steered Mucho Macho Man to victory in the Classic the following day. He won the 2013 Preakness Stakes with Oxbow.

Jockey Stevens expressed his delight. “Nothing can top the Breeders’ Cup I had last year. Being able to go out there and ride at the highest level for great people only three months after having a new knee put in, well, it’s right up there.”

Let us have a paragraph about Frankie Dettori. Another rider with ten Breeders’ Cup winners, Dettori will be on Osaila in the Juvenile Fillies Turf. He replaces Kent Desormeaux for a ride on Imperative in the Classic. Hootenanny will be Dettori’s mount in the Juvenile Turf. No Nay Never in the Turf Sprint will also be ridden by jockey Dettori.

Winner of the Windsor Castle at Royal Ascot, Hootenanny ran second to The Wow Signal in the Prix Morny. No Nay Never won the 2013 Prix Morny and recently won a Group race at Keeneland coming back from a layoff.  Imperative was victorious in the (Grade II) Charles Town Classic in April.

James Doyle, MaximeGuyon, Billy Lee, a rising star in Ireland,  and Olivier Peslier will have Breeders’ Cup rides. Jamie Spencer rides Just The Judge in the Filly-Mare Turf.

The European presence is the subject of nonstop discussion at the moment. Here are the odds offered by British bookmakers on how many winners will come from the European contingent. I want you to know that in America all the wagering is done on the tote. You get 3/2 for three European winners. There is a 11/4 offer for four winners. A 3/1 offer for two winners. If you believe that Europe will have one winner, it is 8/1. It is a juicy 10/1 if you wager that Europe will have five or more winners. Then there is the (slim) possibility that Europe will draw a blank. That is 20/1. If you have a friend in London, go ahead and call.

The Cox Plate, a Grade I race, will be run at Moonee Valley (Australia) on Saturday. Fourteen runners will answer the starter’s call. The Cox Plate is over 10 furlongs and 44 yards on the grass. Fawkner has post four. Trained by R Hicknott and to be ridden by N Hall, Fawkner , winner of the Caulfield Stakes, is favored to win. Adelaide represents Aidan O’Brien and will have Ryan Moore in the saddle. I saw Adelaide win the Secretariat Stakes at Arlington Park on August 16. The O’Brien charge was third in the Prix Niel. Despite draw 13 and the fact that outside posts are at a terrible disadvantage at Moonee Valley, Adelaide must be given more than an ordinary chance.

Zarkash is a three year-old son of Sea The Stars. The mother is Zarkava. Sea The Stars won the Arc in 2009. Zarkava took the Arc in 2008. I consider myself fortunate in having seen these two champions win major races in Europe. Zarkash, yet to race, was fatally injured in a training accident at Chantilly.

Doncaster hosts the Group I Racing Post Trophy for freshmen on Saturday. I erred in saying that Elm Park was from Aidan O’Brien’s yard. I apologize for the mistake.

O’Brien has two runners in the Racing Post Trophy. The race will be at 3 50 P M Greenwich Mean Time. Aloft, a Galileo colt, will be ridden by William Buick. ColmO’Donoghue will be aboard Jacobean, the other O’Brien runner.

Celestial Path, from Sir Mark Prescott’s stable, is two for two.  By Footstepsinthesand, Celestial Path will have Luke Morris who is seeking his first win in a Group I race.

Cock of The North, a Cockney Rebel progeny, is making his sixth start. Trained by Scott Nixon and ridden by Frederick Tylicki, Cock of The North figures to be an outsider.

Elm Park comes Andrew Balding’s yard and will be Andrea Atzeni’s mount. A son Phoenix Reach, Elm Park was third in his debut and has won three in a row. He will carry the public purse.

Restorer is Martin Dwyer’s mount. Successful in his debut, Restorer, a son of Mastercraftsman, ran third in his second start and was second in his most recent venture. William Muir trains.

The John Gosden-Paul Hanaghan team has Snoano. By Nayef, Snoano has won his last two. Given the Gosden-Hanaghan team’s successes this summer, Snoano will have a big following.

Tupi, a Tamayuz colt, is saddled by Richard Hannon who will be the champion trainer in his first year as a licensed professional. Sean Levey, who rode briefly in India not long ago,has the ride on Tupi who has won twice in four starts.

Los Angeles is having warm weather. It was in the 80s on Thursday. If the Breeders’ Cup races are shown on Indian TV, it is a ‘must watch’ deal. Please check it out.
