Superbly bred fillies competing in The Threptin Fillies & Mares Stakes (Gr.3)
By Bob Sawhny

Pune: Six Thoroughbreds have accepted to run in The 1800M Threptin Fillies’& Mares’ Stakes (Grade 3). Thisprestigious race is a terms race for Fillies and Mares, 3 years old and over. It is the 7th race, to be run here, in a card of 10 events and is scheduled to be run at 3.30 P.M. In, my opinion, the winner should emanate from the favorite Circle of Bliss 57.50Kg, Victoria Falls 57.50Kg or Starry Eyes 59Kg. I give below, their Racing Career Record, Pedigree, Good Track-Work & other relevant factors, if any and lastly, My Final Analysis of each of the Trio:-

Circle of Bliss (Singspiel-Dubai Spirit) Trainer: P. Shroff
She is an impeccably bred 4yo filly, who has a career record of being a very consistent performer against top class opposition. She has run 10 races and although, she has only won One race on 25/8/2013 over 1600M as a maiden, she has on Six occasions finished 2nd and run third -twice. And it must be noted that Circle of Bliss has run well in all the Indian Classic Races, because on 15/12/2013 she ran a good 2nd to Mariinsky in The Indian 1000 Guineas (Gr.1), on 18/12014 she ran 2nd to Isn’t She Special in The Indian Oaks (Gr.1) and on 2/2/2014 she finished a good 3rd to Alaindair and Starry Eyes in The Indian Derby (Gr.1). Subsequently, on 8/3/2014 she ran a fairly good 5th to Alaindair in The Indian Turf Invitation Cup (Gr.1) at Hyderabad. Then, her last run was in Pune on 15/8/2014 in The 2000M Eve Champion Trophy (Gr.3) in which, she ran as the favorite but unluckily finished 1/2 a length 2nd to - To The Manor Born, because she was running after a long gap, of over six months.

Pondering, over her pedigree, her superb Sire ‘Singspiel’ is the winner of 9 races viz., (1) A maiden race at 2 in Chester (England)- 7 furlongs (2) At 3 in England - O&K Troy S.- 1 1/2 Miles (3) At 4 in N. America- Canadian Int. S. -1 1/2 Miles (4) At 4  The 2400M Japan Cup (Jpn-1) (5) At 4 in Eng-III Westminster Taxi Insurance S.-1 1/4M (6) At 4 in Eng-III T.G.I. Friday Gordon Richard S. (7) At 5 in En-I Juddmonte Intern. S. (8) At 5 in Eng-I Vodafone Coronation Cup S.-1 1/2 miles (9) At 5 in UAE- The 2000M Dubai World Cup Total Stakes Earned almost $ 6,000,000. ‘Her Dam Dubai Spirit’ is by MT. Livermore out of Phantom Creek who won a couple of races. But, her dam’s tail-line is a strong one, as it goes down to the likes of Native Partner who had 11 wins& 8 places, with Career Earnings of almost $1,40,000.

My Final Analysis:  After running a very good 2nd in her last run on 15/8/2014 to- To The Manor Born, Circle Of Bliss, is bound to have stripped much fitter now and had a good work-out on 24/8/2014 and Circle Of Bliss along with Dreams of You did 1000 in 1-07 (-8), 600 in 39 (-6) Former finished well ahead which shows that Circle of Bliss is absolutely fit for the fray.  Furthermore, the very fit and exquisitely bred 4yo filly Circle of Bliss has performed very well, against far better company that she is competing against now. So, Circle of Bliss has the best credentials to win The Threptin Fillies’& Mares’ Stakes (Gr.3) on Sunday, 31/8/2014.

Starry Eyes (Multidimensional- Pricewise) Trainer: Adil Dajee
She is an attractive, consistent and extremely versatile bay filly who had 12 outings, won 3 races and come, an excellent 2nd- thrice, finished 3rd-once and 4th-once. On 20/1/2013 she finished an impressive close 2nd by a neck to Mariinsky in the 1200M Gool S. Poonawalla Million (Gr.3). In the race, she lay 7th till the 1000M, 6th till the turn and then covered ground very well to finish a good, very close 2nd, indicatingthat an additional furlong or two would suit her wellandthat she would win in her next endeavor, as a good thing, especially over 1400 to 1600M.. And sure enough, in her next endeavor on 10/2/2013 (Mumbai) she won the 1400M Arpan and Arti Million cantering away by a widening 8 lengths, on tight reins, in a fast time of One Minute 24.72 seconds, which could easily have been improved upon, if she were to have been ridden out. Then in her run on 24/2/2013 in the Poonawalla Breeders Multi-Million, Gr.1 (PBMM), she finished a neck 2nd to the highly classy colt- Murioi, despite being slightly hampered in the straight but still beating Mariinsky by 3-1/4 lengths, indicating that she could soon make amends, the next time she runs. Subsequently, on 17/3/2013 (Mumbai) she stylishly won her second race -the 1600M Forbes Breeders’ Juvenile Fillies’ Championship (Gr.3) by a widening 7 1/2L in 1:36.30s which could have been faster, if she were to have been extended in the straight.

Thereafter, Starry Eyes was taken to Bangaloreand on 16/6/2013 she ran in the 1600M Fillies Championship Stakes (Gr.1) but finished in the rear end of the field because she was badly hampered, near the 500M by Duma. Then, after a month on 14/7/2013 she ran in The Bangalore Derby but finished nowhere, because she was faced with immense traffic problems, throughout the race and her staying prowess was also open to question. Hence, no cognizance should be taken ofher poor runs in Bangalore. Subsequently, Starry Eyes effortlessly and easily won The 1400M Maharaja of Morvi Trophy, her third win, on 17/11/2013 in Mumbai. Andin her next run on 15/12/2013 she failed as the favorite and ran 3rd to Mariinsky & Circle of Life in The Indian 1000 Guineas (Gr.1). Then on 2/2/2014 she ran a fabulous 2nd to Alaindair in The McDowell Indian Derby (Gr.1).Subsequently, her run on 8/3/2014 in Hyderabad, Starry Eyes finished a respectable 4thin The Turf Invitation Cup (Gr.1). Subsequently, she ran on 10/8/2014 in Pune over a 1400M trip, against very speedy horses, in which she appeared to just have an airing, to strip fitter for her next endeavor.

Her ‘Sire’ Multidimensional (Danehill –Sacred Song) won 5 races at 3 to 5 (1800M), $ 374,551 including Prix Guillaume d’Ornano -Haras d’Etreham, Gr.2, Rose of Lancaster Stakes, Gr.3 & placed including 2nd in Hardwicke Stakes, Gr.2, 3rd in Dubai Duty Free Arc Trial, Gr.3, 4th in Irish Champion Stakes, Gr.1, Huxley Stakes, Gr.3, Earl of Sefton Stakes, Gr.3, etc. Although, Pricewise the ‘Dam’ ofStarry Eyes did nothing much, the former, is by the Champion late sire ‘Razeen’ out of the very classy Dam‘ ‘Gourgandine’ & Pricewise is a ‘full sister’ to the 2Class One - Western India Geldings (i) Camacho and (ii) Cambiasso.

Final Analysis: The highly exquisitely bred Starry Eyes has a good Racing career record and she has often, raced exceedingly well, among very strong opposition. Plus, she possesses an excellent turn of foot & has had the advantage of a run, in the ongoing 2014 Pune season.  So, the impeccably bred and fit- Starry Eyes, who now has, a H.R. of 101 and as per the terms of the race, will carry the top weight of 59 Kg. So, since Starry Eyes has often fared well against very good horses, she is capable of upsetting one and all. But, Starry Eyes will now find, Circle of Bliss, a very tough rival on 31/8/2014.

Victoria Falls (Razeen – Husun) Trainer: S. K. Sunderji
She is a very sparingly raced bay filly who has won three races and has come 2nd twice and finished 4th once in her career from 8 endeavors. Victoria Falls has the advantage of having a very good win over 1600M, a handicap race for horses rated 60-86 on 3/8/2014 in the ongoing 2014 Pune season which she won by a widening 3L but beating nothing much. Now, the terms of the 1800M Threptin Fillies’ & Mares Stakes’ are against her and Victoria Falls has a low H.R. of 81 but she, is set to carry 57.50Kg on 31/8/2014.

Her ‘Sire’ the late and great ‘Razeen’ needs no introduction as, he has sired, several Classic Winners, Many Black-Type performers and innumerable Classy thoroughbreds, on the Indian Turf. And Her ‘DamHusun won 2 races at 4; dam of: Supreme Treasure (b f by Razeen), 5 wins, Rs.3, 61,500; dam of a winner. Live Legend (b g by Razeen), 6 wins, Rs.16, 84,973 - S. Command Gold Trophy (Gr.3) Portrush (b g by Razeen), 9 wins, Rs.63, 25,094.Amstel (b fby Razeen), 3 wins, Rs.9, 15,525.Vijayrath (c h g by Razeen), 8 wins, Rs.36, 96,555.Hillary (b f by China Visit),1 win, Rs.8, 29, 720. Plus, Her Dam’s Tail-Line is a pretty strong one, as it goes down to the likes of Lady Jester won 7 races; dam of 6 winners: Friendly Jester,2 Wins; dam of Fayruz (7 wins). Trickster, 1 win; dam of Tribal Jester (14 wins incl. Hamburger Flieger-Preis, L, etc)

My Final Analysis: The superbly bred 4YO Filly-Victoria Falls has done three good work-outs in August 2014 on 14/8, 21/8 and 28/8 and had a good win on 3/8/2014 in Pune over a 1600M. But, Victoria Falls does not come in well by the terms of the race, which in fact, are very much against her. Therefore, Victoria Falls despite being very fit will have to do something sensational, to try and win on 31/8/2014. So, in my opinion, if Victoria Falls can come 2nd, it will be a good effort.
