There have been several occasions when professional artists have exhibited their paintings at the Royal Western India Turf Club. However, the lush green lawns in the member’s enclosure at the Mahalaxmi Racecourse became the unlikely venue for the artwork of students hailing from the JJ School of Art over the weekend.

The paintings of 15 students pursuing a Master’s degree in Fine Art along with the work of another 10 doing a hobby course from JJ were strategically located in the enclosure and easily attracted the attention of members who are normally busy punting on horses. The young students were pleasantly surprised to find race-goers spending their spare time having a careful look at their artwork. One student did a fine sketch of a section of the member’s enclosure but the drawing of the turf club’s magnificent building adjacent to the paddock proved to be the pièce de résistance of this two-day exhibition. We learn that a similar exhibition is planned during at Pune race course during the monsoon.
