Racing for eyeballs
Mumbai Mirror

It’s an undisputed fact that the Rs 60-crore prize money offered for the Dubai World Cup keeps attracting the best thoroughbreds from around the world but it’s also true that the glamour associated with this signature event lures well-known racing personalities to the desert kingdom every year. Not to mention stylistas who eye the grand prize- a Jaguar convertible – for the most cutting-edge outfits and fascinators. So Cyrus Poonawalla and Khushroo Dhunjibhoy, both former chairmen of Royal Western India Turf Club, were in Dubai with some close friends to watch the world’s richest horse-racing event, at the Meydan Racecourse on Saturday.

It may be plain coincidence but, the same evening, the RWITC kicked off its celebrations to mark the 130th anniversary of the Mahalaxmi Race Course, which is as magnificent as any racecourse in the world. For the last couple of weeks, Chairman Vivek Jain has been working overtime to see that this event is successful and gets enough eyeballs. The club hosted a gala dinner on Saturday in an air-conditioned tent where a thousand guests got an eyeful of Raghu Rai’s exclusive pics of the racecourse along with British artist Jeremy Houghton’s equestrian art show. An action-packed racing programme followed the next day attended by racing enthusiasts.
