The Pink Filly and The Dr. S C Jain Sprinters’ come together!
By Vivek Jain

The hooplah around the mammoth Indian Derby is still in the air, but we yet pull another cat out of our bag on Sunday, within a week. A trophy studded, near fully sponsored ten race card with a host of events has the makings of yet another great day at Mahalaxmi, now drawing closer to its 130th year celebration.

The Dr.S.C.Jain Sprinters’ Championship, has come to be recognized as the leading sprint race in the country, second only to the Sprinters’ Cup, on Invitation weekend. The 21st running has a sizzling field and it is more than likely its winner will go on to win the Sprinters’, as have past winners Exclusive Virtue, Indiscretion, Blue Horizon, Oasis Star and Nefyn. A true tribute to a race named after one of the Club’s longest serving Chairman.

In our endeavour to step up our CSR drive, our family has associated with The Pink Filly initiative of the NGO Passages, with a rare amalgam of art and charity. The brainchild of Tarana Khubchandani, about 15 horse sculptures hand painted by leading artists of the stature of Arzan Khambatta, Ajay De, Jatin Das, to name a few can be bid for in the afternoon to raise funds for Breast Cancer. One sculpture will be raffled to the highest bidder. And the Jain Trophy will be done by no less than leading artist Paresh Maity who has been nominated for a Padma Shri this year. In effect a member can take home a rare work of art and support a cancer patient at one stroke!  And the final brush on the canvas would be a chance to win a stay at one of the most luxurious spa hotels in the world at the skiing resort of St.Moritz in Switzerland for a couple in the summer.

If this were not enough, the steeped in heritage Byramjee Jeejebhoy Eclipse Stakes of India shares top billing and its sponsor Mr Byram Jeejebhoy also, as his wont, associates with a charitable institution and presents a dance performance by children of the NGO. And talking of dance, and to somewhat offset the sombre mood, we will have a series of dance sequences by theatre personality Raell Padamsee, which will create pink frenzy at the afternoon! And pink is the suggested dress code to add to the colourful day!

In a day packed with thrills and frills will also see the running of The Hello! Classic 2014 where the society’s crème de la crème gather for a day of haute fashion, delectable food and a celebrity attendance for a glamorous day. Cine star Kangana Ranaut will give away the Cup. And as a final flourish, we also run a tribute race to a legend, ghazal king the late Jagjit Singh, in a million race funded by the owners, his wife Chitra and the Club, making it a one-of-a-kind race, befitting the memory of the maestro.

The RWITC believes in walking the talk of making racing at Mahalaxmi an exhilarating experience, yet again!
