The Indian Oaks will be what a Classic Day should be
By Vivek Jain

It has already been a season of thrills and chills, and as finally the dust has settled on the Committee elections and its aftermath, it is time to get down to serious business and having racing and not politics take centre stage.

The Villoo Poonawalla Indian Oaks, the Ladies' Derby, will be the shining star of a packed ten race card, all trophies, with a stunning race card replete with plums on Saturday, on the eve of the mammoth Mumbai Marathon on Sunday.  The quality on offer and off track features proves the point on why a classic day at Mahalaxmi is unmatched in the country. The main race, named after the late wife of Dr.Cyrus Poonawalla, an illiustrious past Chairman of the RWITC, has a field of 14 staying fillies, and with no In the Spotlight or Jacqueline in it, should be a most competitive race, with the first three probably taking a chance in the McDowell Signature Indian Derby, just two weeks away. Our creative headline for the day- "Its' always ladies first at the races!"

The day will have something for everyone. For the punters, and after all racing is about betting, a record mouth watering 25 lakhs will be added to the super jackpot pool, which by itself will be a huge draw. We have pulled out all the stops to promote racing by a slew of initiatives, and this will be a new feather in our cap to get both the attendance and betting numbers up. The Gool S Poonawalla Million (Gr.3) and The Sahaan Million will be the added attractions for the day. Sahaan Million hosted by the Sahaan Group from Pune also being run with their high tea and entertainment, it will be a big day indeed.

If racing and betting are synonymous, so is racing and glamour- at Mahalaxmi. Kareena Kapoor, at the top of the female actors ladder in Bollywood will be the guest of honour for the media house that hosts a race on the same afternoon. Our Club has played host to several superstars but I believe Kareena makes a long awaited debut on one of our race days! Accompanying her will be a bevy of stars including rising stars Nargis Fakhri and Varun Dhawan. So, if the horses stampede on the turf, the stars are sure to result in a stampede around the paddock, and watch out for the fillies both on and off the track!

If glamour, sport and big money dominate on Saturday, the RWITC also plays venue host to the The Worli Festival next weekend, in an endeavour to partner with iconic events that showcase Mumbai's heritage and culture. This festival made its debut last year and made a huge splash to highlight the district where the race course resides. As the season progresses we will associate with many more events that encompass charity, music, theatre, wellness to name some, to stamp our presence as not only a racing megamoth but also as a leading contributor to making Mumbai what it is today
