RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “DEVOTED” (N.S.PARMAR) IN RACE NO.88 – THE SPEARHEAD PLATE- RUN ON 3RD SEPTEMBER, 2017 :

The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Jockey N.S.Parmar on 7th September, 2017 in the above connection. He said that his instructions were to take a jump and  sit in 4th position, from the 800 metres he made his move but keep him covered and to do his best in the straight. He said that in the straight the horse was not passing the other horse.

Trainer Ivor Fernandes was questioned on 8th September, 2017. He said that he was not present at the races on 3rd September, 2017 and had told Trainer Himmat Singh who saddled his horse, to give the above instructions to Jockey N.S.Parmar. He said that he had seen the race and the Jockey rode well till coming into the straight, however, thereafter he kept following the front horse although he had enough room on either side. Trainer Ivor Fernandes was informed that the Jockey had stated in the enquiry that the horse was not passing the other horse. Trainer Ivor Fernandes said that if the horse was not passing, he would not have improved from the fourth to the 2nd position.

The video recording of Race No.88 was viewed and Trainer Ivor Fernandes reiterated that in the last 200 metres the Jockey had enough room on either side to move in or out but he kept following the front horse for no apparent reason.

Having heard the submissions made by the Trainer and Jockey and having viewed the video recording of the race, the Stipendiary Stewards were not satisfied with the explanation tendered by Jockey N.S.Parmar, he was reported to the Stewards for such action as they deem fit for unsatisfactory riding.

The Stewards of the Club at their meeting held on Saturday, 7th October, 2017 interviewed Trainer Ivor Fernandes and Jockey N.S.Parmar in the above connection and having heard the submissions made and having viewed the video recording of the race, were not satisfied with the explanation tendered by Jockey N.S.Parmar. However, they decided to give him the benefit of the doubt for the charge of “unsatisfactory riding” and held him guilty of riding an incompetent race. In that, entering the home straight, he had sufficient room to make his move from either side of TORREZZO who was racing in front, however, he did not make sufficient effort to pull the horse in or out but continued following TORREZZO and did not give his horse a clear run. Trainer Ivor Fernandes also expressed his dissatisfaction with the riding. Taking an overall view and keeping in mind Jockey N.S.Parmar’s clean record and that the horse was at longer odds, the Stewards of the Club took a lenient view and decided to suspend his Jockey’s license w.e.f. 28th October, 2017 to 29th October, 2017 (both days inclusive) (permitted to ride work/mock race).

RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “JUNE” (P.S.CHOUHAN) IN RACE NO.89 – THE RADICAL FORCE PLATE - RUN ON 3RD SEPTEMBER, 2017 :

The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer Nirad Karanjawala in the above connection. Trainer Nirad Karanjawala said that JUNE was carrying bottom weight and he had instructed the Jockey to go to the front and make the running and from the 1600 metres make it a decent run race.

The video recording of the race (normal view  as well as the back view) of the straight was viewed and the Trainer agreed that there was enough space for the Jockey to ride out but he had no room on the left to use the whip. He further opined that his horse was travelling well at the back stretch, however, since Jockey D.S.Daman (VULCAN) came alongside and started going head to head, this could have had a bearing on his horse’s performance.

Jockey P.S.Chouhan confirmed the instructions. He too was of the opinion that JUNE was travelling well at the back stretch until such time that Jockey D.S.Daman (VULCAN) came alongside and started going head to head and this could have had a bearing on his horse’s performance. To a specific question, Jockey P.S.Chouhan stated that in the last furlong he gave the horse a couple of reminders but thereafter VULCAN was in close proximity and he did not have sufficient room to use the whip on his near side. He also felt that, his mount was not responding well under whip and he responded better when ridden hands and heels.

Having heard the submissions made and having viewed the video recording of the race, the Stipendiary Stewards felt that the Jockey had enough room along the rails all through the straight and he should have been more vigorous in his riding effort and therefore reported the matter to the Stewards for such action as they deem fit.

The Stewards of the Club at their meeting held on Saturday, 7th October, 2017 interviewed Trainer Nirad Karanjawala and Jockey P.S.Chouhan in the above connection and having heard the submissions made and having viewed the video recording of Race No.89, all angles, in normal as well as slow motion and having viewed  Jockey P.S.Chouhan’s winning ride on FRIVOLOUS in Race No.146, the Stewards were not satisfied with the explanation tendered by Jockey P.S.Chouhan and held him guilty of unsatisfactory riding on his mount JUNE. In that, in the last furlong when VULCAN (D.S.Daman) came alongside on his outside and he was travelling stride to stride with VULCAN, even conceding that he did not have sufficient room on the left to use the whip due to close proximity with VULCAN, however, he changed his whip hand far too late and was not vigorous / his riding style was different as was evident on viewing his winning ride on FRIVOLOUS.

Therefore, the Stewards of the Club decided to suspend his Jockey’s license for 8 Race Days, i.e. w.e.f. 28th to 29th October, 2017 and w.e.f. 19th November, 2017 to 7th December, 2017 (permitted to ride work/mock race).

RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “WE BREAK THE RULES” (P.S.CHOUHAN) IN RACE NO.105 – THE ASPINALLS PLATE - RUN ON 10TH SEPTEMBER, 2017 :

The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer C.D.Katrak in the above connection. He said that his only worry was whether the horse would get the 9 furlong trip, hence his main instructions to Jockey P.S.Chouhan was to tuck him in and sit quite, give him a chance and coming into the straight to do his best. When asked whether he had given any specific instructions to come from the inside or outside, Tr.C.D.Katrak replied in the negative. He said that coming into the straight the Jockey committed himself to make his move from the inside between the 400 metres and 300 metres. He said that on being questioned after the race, Jockey P.S.Chouhan informed him that just when he was about to go through, KING OF KILLEN (S.J.Sunil) shifted in whereby his horse ducked in. Tr.C.D.Katrak added that LORD GRANTHAM was always ahead of WE BREAK THE RULES and if his horse runs into the front horse, he cannot blame the front horse. He said that he came to the room to view the race along with Jockey P.S.Chouhan so as to lodge an objection against KING OF KILLEN, however, the Jockey felt that there was no point in lodging an objection because although KING OF KILLEN, did come in, he had not touched his horse but the horse had ducked in seeing the other horse.

The video recording of the race was viewed and when specifically asked whether the Jockey should have made his move from the outside in the straight considering his previous run where he had come from the outside, Trainer C.D.Katrak said that the only place the Jockey could have come from the outside was coming around the final bend but thereafter on entering the straight, between the 400 metres and 300 metres he had already committed himself to make his move from the inside and then KING OF KILLEN shifted in on to  his horse. When asked whether there was sufficient room along the rails for a horse to go through in the last 50 metres, Trainer C.D.Katrak said that he had seen the back view and from what he could recollect, he did not think there was sufficient room along the rails for a horse to pass through comfortably.

Jockey P.S.Chouhan said that he was instructed to take a good jump and save the horse, not to use him in the early part as he was running over this distance for the first time, and to do his best in the straight. To a specific question, he said that his horse was travelling very comfortably and on entering the straight the other runners shifted out, so he came the shortest way. The video recording of the race was viewed and on being asked what transpired at the finish, Jockey P.S.Chouhan said that when he asked his horse for an effort, he charged into the front runner forcing him to check his mount and also the front horse had suddenly slowed down at that stage. The back view of the straight was viewed and on questioning, Jockey P.S.Chouhan stated that it was only when he had checked his mount that the gap along the rails opened up.

On a request from Jockey P.S.Chouhan, the previous races of the horse i.e. Race No.21 was viewed and he pointed out that the horse was sporting Blinkers in the race and in the straight when another horse came alongside and Jockey Neeraj Rawal made an effort, the horse had behaved in a similar manner and charged due to which he was steadied.

Thereafter the video recording of Race No.47, ridden by Jockey P.S.Chouhan, was viewed and the Jockey pointed out that in this race the horse raced without the Blinkers and he was hesitant to pass the front horse and just managed to win because ORION’S BELT (Dashrath Singh) shifted in.

Having heard the submissions made and having viewed the video recording of the race (front view as well as the back view) and also the previous races of the horse run during the current Pune Meeting and giving due weight-age to the statements of the Jockey, the Stipendiary Stewards felt that a Jockey of his calibre should have made more of an effort. Therefore, the matter was reported to the Stewards for such action as they deem fit.

The Stewards of the Club at their meeting held on Saturday, 7th October, 2017 interviewed Trainer C.D.Katrak and Jockey P.S.Chouhan in the above connection and having heard the submissions made and having viewed the video recording of the race, decided that no action was called for in the matter.

RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “UNFORGETTABLE YOU” (YASH NARREDU IN RACE NO.115 – THE ELOISE PLATE - RUN ON 16TH SEPTEMBER, 2017 :

The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer M.Narredu and Jockey Yash Narredu in the above connection. Trainer M.Narredu said that he had asked the Jockey to drop to the last position, give the filly a chance and start improving from the 1000 metres. However, since the owner felt that she should not be pushed while negotiating the hill, the Jockey was asked to start improving from the 800 metres. Trainer M.Narredu felt that this was a slow run race which may not have suited the filly.

It was pointed out to Trainer M.Narredu that in the previous race which the won, the Jockey had made his move much earlier despite that being a 2000 metre race (200 metres more than the race in question). Trainer Narredu replied that the set of horses and pace in the previous race was completely different and that the horses which finished behind UNFORGETTABLE YOU in her previous race, have subsequently failed to win. Further, in that particular race, he had in fact asked the Jockey to sit in the mid bunch but unfortunately Jockey P. Trevor was forced to settle her in the rear, which worked to her advantage. He added that he specifically wanted the Jockey to wait since last year when Jockey Suraj Narredu rode the filly, he had instructed the Jockey to take a jump, sit in a good position and to do his best in the straight. However, after taking over the running in the straight she loafed and was cornered in the last 150 metres. Therefore, he felt that the filly has a good turn of foot and that she should not be used earlier.  To a query, Trainer Narredu stated that the filly had sustained injury in the Pune Derby last year and was recovering, hence he could not run her during the Mumbai Season 2016/2017.

When questioned about the future plans for the filly, Trainer Narredu informed that he intends to run her in The Fillies and Mares Stakes (Gr. III). He said that the Jockey’s instructions may be different in her next race as she will be carrying bottom weight.

Jockey Yash Narredu stated that whilst the Trainer had asked him to sit last and make his move from the 5 furlongs, the owner instructed him to give the filly a chance to settle and make his move from the 4 furlongs and to do his best. On being asked as to how the race panned out, he stated that as instructed, he started niggling the filly from the 4 furlongs, however the front runners had quickened passing the three furlong and his filly took time to respond to the change in pace.

Having heard the Trainer and Jockey and after having viewed the video recording of the race in question as also all the previous races of the filly, the Stipendiary Stewards were not satisfied with the explanation tendered by Jockey Yash Narredu and reported him to the Stewards of the Club for riding an ill-judged race.

The Stewards of the Club at their meeting held on Saturday, 7th October, 2017 interviewed Trainer M.Narredu and Jockey Yash Narredu in the above connection and having heard the submissions made and having viewed the video recording of the race, the Stewards were not satisfied with the explanation tendered by Jockey Yash Narredu and held him guilty of riding an injudicious race. In that, he was specifically instructed to make his move from the 800 metres,  however, he made his move far too late on a favourite thereby leaving the horse too much to do in the straight which may have cost him the race. The Stewards also considered his recent record and taking an overall view, decided to suspend his Jockey’s licence for 4 Race Days i.e. w.e.f. 28th October, 2017 to 29th October, 2017 and w.e.f. 19th Novemer, 2017 to 24th November, 2017 (permitted to ride work/mock race).

RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE COMPLAINT LODGED BY JOCKEY A.IMRAN KHAN AGAINST THE OTHER RIDERS IN RACE NO.132 – THE NIRMAL RUIA GOLD TROPHY RUN ON 23RD SEPTEMBER, 2017 :

The Stipendiary Stewards reported that after the all clear was given to the fourth race on Saturday, 23rd September 2017, Jockey A. Imran Khan, rider of “ACCOLADE” complained that he had heard Jockey Yash Narredu,  rider of “COLOMBIANA” asking Jockey Suraj Narredu, rider of “PHOENIX TIGER” to move out and subsequently in to hamper the running of ACCOLADE.

Jockeys A. Imran Khan, Yash Narredu, Suraj Narredu and Neeraj Rawal were questioned by the Stipendiary Stewards in the above connection and the matter was reported to the Stewards.

The Stewards of the Club at their meeting held on Saturday, 7th October, 2017 interviewed Jockeys A.Imran Khan, Yash Narredu, Suraj Narredu and Neeraj Rawal in the above connection and having heard them and having viewed the video recording of the race, all angles, in normal as well as slow motion and in absence of an audio, the Stewards of the Club were not able to come to a conclusion whether the incident of PHOENIX TIGER moving out and then moving in, between the 800 and 600 metres, was intentional or not, hence they decided to give Jockeys Suraj Narredu and Yash Narredu the benefit of the doubt in this case. However, the Stewards noted that such incidents bring disrepute to the game of horse racing, therefore, they decided to warn them to be more careful.

RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “FERNEBACHE” (N.S.PARMAR) IN RACE NO.81 – THE ROSMINI PLATE (DIV.II) (1200 METRES) RUN ON 2ND SEPTEMBER, 2017 :

The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer S.K.Sunderji and Jockey N.S.Parmar in the above connection. Trainer S.K.Sunderji said that the horse lacks early speed, hence he had instructed the Jockey to take a good jump and sit in mid bunch, gradually improve him and to do his best. Jockey N.S.Parmar confirmed the instructions and added that that the horse did not take a smart jump and he pushed the horse for about half a furlong but he did not respond. He said that there were horses in front and there was a lot of kick back because of which the horse did not gallop. He said that the horse has run three times so far and in the first race of the Season he was ridden by an apprentice claiming 5 kg. allowance and that time also he did not show early speed.

To a specific question, Jockey N.S.Parmar said that once the horse started moving in the straight there were horses in front of him and he was unable to move out.

When asked about the future plans for this horse. Trainer S.K.Sunderji said that he plans to race the horse after three to four weeks.

The explanation tendered by the Trainer and Jockey was noted and both were informed that a watch would be kept on the future running of this horse.
