RACE NO.1(17) – THE AIR DASH PLATE : (About) 1400 Metres – 7 Runners

ALFONSO (Dashrath Singh) jumped out throwing its head thus losing about 2 lengths at the start.

Trevor has been fined Rs.2,000/- for failing to change his whip hand despite his mount shifting out.

Jockey Neeraj Rawal (BLAVATSKY) was observed to have used the whip in excess of the prescribed limit on his mount. On questioning, Jockey Neeraj Rawal stated that his mount had shifted out due to the outward movement of COMANDPERFORMANCE (P. Trevor) who was racing alongside and he had used the whip to deter his mount from shifting out and causing interference to ALFONSO (Dashrath Singh) who was racing on his outside. As such, no action has been initiated against Jockey Neeraj Rawal.

An objection was lodged by Jockey Dashrath Singh, the rider of ALFONSO (Placed Second) against BLAVATSKY (Neeraj Rawal, Placed First). The reason being, nearing the 100 metres post, his mount was travelling very well and came alongside BLAVATSKY at which point, BLAVATSKY came on to him due to which he had to break the momentum by checking his mount, despite which the gelding made a re-run and lost by a neck ,

After considering the submissions made by the Jockeys concerned in conjunction with that of the Stipendiary Stewards and relying on their judgment, the Stewards decided to over-rule the objection.

RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “SNOW BLAST” IN RACE NO 2 - THE ARTS PLATE (DIV.II) - RUN ON 27th JULY, 2017 :

The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer Altaf Hussain and Jockey Vikram Jodha in the above connection. Tr. Altaf Hussain stated that he had instructed the Jockey to sit in 6th/7th position and to do his best. When asked for his observation with regard to the Jockey’s riding in the straight, Tr. Altaf Hussain said that the Jockey had ridden out the horse in the straight and he was satisfied with the riding.

Jockey Vikram Jodha confirmed the instructions and said that he had ridden out the horse all the way and had done his best. He added that the Trainer had also informed him before the race that the horse was running after one year and not to punish him. Trainer Altaf Hussain confirmed this statement and said that the horse was operated for his joints and was running after a long gap.

After having heard the submissions made and viewing the video recording of the race and keeping in mind that the horse was still a maiden, the Stipendiary Stewards took a lenient view and decided to suspend Jockey Vikram Jodha’s licence for 20th August, 2017 for riding an indifferent race and Tr. Altaf Hussain was fined Rs.10,000/- for tacit approval and was told to avail of the Mock Race if his horse was coming out of a long lay off.

RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “BROTHERSOFTHEWIND” IN RACE NO 4 - THE A.J.WADIA PLATE (DIV.I) - RUN ON 27th JULY, 2017 :

The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer Vinesh and Jockey Hanumant Singh in the above connection.  Trainer Vinesh stated that he had instructed the Jockey to take a good jump, settle the horse and to do his best in the straight. On being asked whether he meant that the horse was to be settled well up, Tr. Vinesh agreed. When asked about his observation of the race, Tr. Vinesh said that after the race the Jockey had informed him that the horse took an awkward jump and also he had received interference soon after the start due to which the horse had stumbled. He added that the Jockey had also advised him that the horse would be better off over a mile since he lacked early pace.  When specifically questioned about the Jockey’s riding effort in the straight, Tr. Vinesh said that considering the calibre of the Jockey, he has ridden out the horse. He said that Jockey Hanumant Singh was working for him and he would be using his services in the future as well.

Jockey Hanumant Singh confirmed the instructions and added that the horse took an awkward jump and also he had received interference soon after the start due to which the horse had stumbled. He said that he had done his best.

Having heard the submissions made and viewing the video recording of the race, the Stipendiary Stewards were not satisfied with the explanation tendered by the Trainer and Jockey. In that, even giving Jockey Hanumant Singh the benefit of the doubt for the start, however, considering that in the race in question he rode the horse contrary to its running pattern wherein he made no attempt to sit in a forward position and was not vigorous in the straight, he was suspended for 20th August, 2017 (permitted to ride work/mock race) for riding an indifferent race and Tr. Vinesh was fined Rs.10,000/- for tacit approval.

RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “SKY MINE” IN RACE NO 7 - THE P.HADOW TROPHY - RUN ON 27th JULY, 2017 :

The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer Imtiaz A. Sait and Jockey C. S. Jodha in the above connection. Trainer Imtiaz A. Sait stated that he had instructed the Jockey to hit the front if the filly was going to the front on her own or else to sit well up and to do his best in the straight. Jockey C. S. Jodha confirmed the instructions.

The video recording of the race was viewed and when asked for his observations of the race, Tr. Imtiaz A. Sait said that although the filly had worked very well, he was of the opinion that she was racing on this underfoot condition for the first time, was drawn badly and may not have liked being chased to the front in the early part. He added that the filly had coughed a couple of times soon after the race and was running after a long break, hence he got her examined by Dr. Prashant Wandhare the next day, who after carrying out an endoscopic examination made certain observations and suggested to use a Tongue Strap and Cross Nose Band in her future engagements. He said that since the filly was already sporting a Tongue Strap, he would also use a Cross Nose Band on her in the future

Jockey C. S. Jodha, when asked whether he had anything more to add, he said that the filly was moving well on the bit but when he asked for an effort in the straight, she started leaning inwards and was found wanting and not responding. Jockey C. S. Jodha was informed that he should have reported the matter to the Stipes and not waited to be called.

After having heard the submissions made and viewing the video recording of the race the explanation tendered by the Trainer and Jockey was noted for future reference.

RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “FRIVOLOUS” IN RACE NO 11 - THE GAEA PLATE  - RUN ON 28th JULY, 2017 :

The Stipendiary Stewards reported that on being questioned immediately after the race, Jockey Yash Narredu stated that his instructions were to ride his own race, come home the shortest way and to do his best. He added that he was informed that the horse was running after a long lay off. Trainer M. Narredu confirmed the instructions and to a question stated that next time out he would ask the Jockey to sit well up.

Trainer M. Narredu and Jockey Yash Narredu were again questioned on 2nd August, 2017 and before commencement of the enquiry, Tr. M. Narredu was informed that it had been brought to the knowledge of the Stipendiary Stewards that FRIVOLOUS had sustained eye injuries, however, an enquiry has been initiated into the running and riding of the horse.

Trainer M. Narredu was reminded that his instructions were recorded after the race and the Stipes were of the opinion that he should have been more specific in his instructions to the Jockey. Tr. M. Narredu stated that this horse has generally been a bad starter and considering the position the Jockey found himself after the start, he had no option but to ride from there. He added that the horse was racing after a long gap since he had a stress fracture. On being pointed out that the Jockey should have made an effort to improve his position earlier, Tr. M. Narredu reiterated that due to the poor start, the Jockey was caught in that particular position and thereafter had nowhere to go and was forced to ride his race from there. He added that in all his past races the horse has been tardy coming out of the gates.

The video recording of all the previous starts of FRIVOLOUS was viewed.

After having heard the submissions made and viewing the video recording of the race in question as also its previous starts including the starting gate camera, going through the Medical and Work Log Books and considering the medical history of the horse as also the Report from the Club’s Vet and having scrutinized the betting sheets, the Stipendiary Stewards reported Jockey Yash Narredu to the Stewards for riding an ill-judged race and Trainer M. Narredu for not giving specific riding instructions to his Jockey. From the previous races, it was evident that the horse takes a good jump and normally settled in a reasonably forward position. However, in the race in question, Jockey Yash Narredu made no effort to get into a good position on an On Money favourite.

The Stewards of the Club at their meeting held on 5th August, 2017 interviewed Trainer M. Narredu and Jockey Yash Narredu in the above connection and having heard them and having viewed the race, were not satisfied with the explanation tendered by Jockey Yash Narredu.  However, keeping in mind that there was no drift in odds, the Stewards gave him the benefit of the doubt for the charge of “unsatisfactory riding” and decided to suspend his Jockey’s license w.e.f. 26th August, 2017 to 3nd September, 2017 (both days inclusive) for riding an ill-judged race (permitted to ride work/mock race).

Further, the Stewards were also not satisfied with the explanation tendered by Trainer M. Narredu. However, keeping in mind the overall circumstances of the case, they decided to only caution him for not giving specific riding instructions to the Jockey instead of fining him as recommended by the Stipes.

RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “DANCING PRINCE” IN RACE NO 15 - THE ZAHRA PLATE  - RUN ON 28th JULY, 2017 :

The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer M. Narredu and Jockey J. E. Pereira in the above connection. Trainer M. Narredu stated that he had instructed the Jockey to take a good jump and not to shift out at the start, sit wherever comfortable and coming round the final bend give him a chance, not to go wide and to do his best in the straight. When asked for his observation of the race, Tr. M. Narredu said that the Jockey could have been more vigorous and may be, he could have given a couple of more cracks in the straight. Jockey J. E. Pereira confirmed the instructions and stated that the horse was hanging out and he had done his best.

To a question, Trainer M. Narredu stated that since the Jockey had argued that the horse was hanging, he did not report the matter to the Stipes.

The video recording of the race was viewed and to a specific question on his riding effort in the straight, Jockey J. E. Pereira reiterated that the horse was hanging out and he had ridden out.

After having heard the submissions made and viewing the video recording of the race, the Stipendiary Stewards were not satisfied with the explanation tendered by Jockey J. E. Pereia and decided to suspend his Jockey’s license for 20th August, 2017 for riding an indifferent race (permitted to ride work/mock race) and Tr. M. Narredu was cautioned for failing to report to the Stipendiary Stewards after the race, his dissatisfaction with the Jockey’s riding effort in the straight.
