ADDITIONAL REPORTS :

RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “FREE SPEECH” IN RACE NO 200 - THE HUNTING MEMORIES PLATE - RUN ON 1ST MARCH, 2017 :

Trainer H.J.Antia and Jockey G.Amit were questioned immediately after the race in the above connection. Trainer H.J.Antia stated that he had instructed Jockey G.Amit to take a good jump and if the horse is keen then go to the front or else to sit in 2nd/3rd position and to do his best. Further, he had specifically told the Jockey to keep in mind that FREE SPEECH is a lazy horse and he needed the whip to win the race, therefore, he should use the whip on the horse at least 4 to 5 times and he would not mind even if goes up to the maximum permissible limit of 8 times. Trainer H.J.Antia said that he had declared Jockey G.Amit since this horse required the whip or else he would have declared his own apprentice and claimed 5 kg allowance. He said that Jockey G.Amit had disregarded his instructions and not used the whip even once and he was not satisfied with the Jockey’s riding.

When questioned, Jockey G. Amit initially stated that he was told not to use the whip but thereafter said that he was told to use the whip 2 or 3 times. Subsequently he said that he felt the horse did not need the whip as he was moving well without the whip and therefore he only rode out hands and heels.

Trainer H.J.Antia and Jockey G.Amit were again questioned on 2nd March, 2017.  When confronted with the Trainer’s instructions, Jockey G.Amit admitted that the Trainer had told him that FREE SPEECH was a lazy horse and he should use the whip on the horse up to the stipulated 8 times which was the permissible limit.  He said that coming into the straight he had his whip in the left hand but this being only his third ride with the whip, he was still not comfortable using the whip with the left hand and also, he was scared to change his whip hand. When asked as to why he carried the whip in the left hand when he was more comfortable using it with the right hand, he had no plausible explanation.

The video recording of Race No.200 was viewed and Trainer H.J.Antia said that the Jockey should have gone for his whip in the straight which he failed to do and that he was not satisfied with the Jockey’s riding.

Thereafter, the video recording of Race No.199, where Jockey G.Amit finished 2nd on SILVER EDGE, was viewed. It was observed that in this race the Jockey had kept his whip in the left hand and thereafter changed the whip to the right hand and used it comfortably. The Stipendiary Stewards further reported that there was a drift in odds on FREE SPEECH from 7/2 to 5/1.

The Stewards of the Club at their meeting held on 9th March, 2017 interviewed Trainer H.J.Antia and Jockey G.Amit in the above connection and having heard them and having viewed the video of the race, the Stewards were not satisfied with the explanation tendered by Jockey G.Amit and held him guilty of unsatisfactory riding. Therefore, the Stewards decided to suspend his Jockey’s license w.e.f. 25th March, 2017 to 9th April, 2017 (both days inclusive) for unsatisfactory riding on his mount FREE SPEECH in Race No.200 (permitted to ride work/mock race).
