THE INDIAN 1000 GUINEAS (GR. I)
 
The racing season of 1942-43 was a watershed for Indian racing and breeding, as in that season, for the first time, the Indian classics were run. To begin with, The Indian 1000 Guineas, The Indian 2000 Guineas, and The Indian Derby, were framed. The inaugural running of The Indian 1000 Guineas was on Friday, 1st January 1943. This race has only twice been run in Pune, when the Mumbai course could not be used.
 
The Indian 1000 Guineas is for three year old fillies only, run on the second Sunday of December, carrying level weights over 1600 mts.
 
The inaugural running of this race was won by The Maharaja Gaekwar of Baroda grand filly “Princess Beautiful”, trained by M.C. Patel, ridden by Jockey E.Britt. She won by 8 lengths, the longest winning margin till date. Rs.20,250/- was the winner’s stakes.
 
She also went on to win the other two Classics that year, i.e. The Indian 2000 Guineas, and The Indian Derby.
 
The following year, the Indian Oaks and The Indian St. Leger (run initially as The Governor’s General Cup) were also added to the list of Indian Classics. 
 
In 1964-65, “Rose Royal” won The 1000 Guineas, The Oaks and The Derby and in 2009-10, “Jacqueline” won The 1000 Guineas, The 2000 Guineas, The Oaks and The Derby.
 
The Owners to have won this race the maximum number of times was HH Maharajadhiraj of Jammu and Kashmir and so also Dr. Cyrus S. Poonawalla and partners, 4 times each. The Trainer to have won this race the maximum number of times is Uttam Singh, 6 times, and the Jockey to have won this classic the maximum number of times, Jockey S. Chavan, 6 times. S. Chavan has got the distinction of winning the 1000 Guineas in three consecutive years (1957/58, 58/59, 59/60). The closest finish of this race was in the year 1952 when “Kaniya Kumari” won. The margin of victory for the first four horses were short head, neck, short head.
