ADDITIONAL REPORTS:

RE: ENQUIRY INTO THE RIDING OF JOCKEY NEERAJ RAWAL ON “RUFFINA” IN RACE NO.33 – THE PUNE BOOKMAKERS’ ASSOCIATION TURF CLUB TROPHY (GR.3) -  RUN ON 5TH AUGUST, 2018 :

The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer Dallas Todywalla and Jockey Neeraj Rawal in the above connection. Trainer Dallas Todywalla said that he had instructed the Jockey to take a nice jump, don’t let the filly get too keen as he had lost The Indian 1000 Guineas that way, hence keep it simple. He said that it was the first time that the filly was carrying top weight of 59 kg. and giving weight to the whole field and he had told the Jockey to stay out of trouble and ride his own race.  Jockey Neeraj Rawal confirmed the instructions.

The video recording of Race No.33 was viewed and Jockey Neeraj Rawal was asked to take the Stipes through the race. Jockey Neeraj Rawal said that the filly did not jump out smartly. Thereafter, he was in a good position, however, he got squeezed from the outside, hence he sat where he was and ABBEY who is a fast horse was in front so he settled his filly behind ABBEY. He said that he was told by the Owner not to get into traffic problems and ride a clean race. Pointing to the replay, Jockey Neeraj Rawal said that passing the 1000 metres he was stuck a bit wide as he had no place to go in.

At this stage, Trainer Dallas Todywalla interjected and pointing to the replay said that approaching the 1000 metres, he would have preferred Jockey Neeraj Rawal sitting behind TIMELESS at that juncture.

Jockey Neeraj Rawal went on to explain that passing the 600 metres he saw TIMELESS getting away so he pulled his filly out to get her going (pointing to the replay) and in the straight he had timed his run and the filly came alongside TIMELESS but did not head him.

The video recording of Race No.168 run during the Mumbai Meeting 20017/18 was viewed.

When asked for his observation of Jockey Neeraj Rawal’s riding in the race in question, Trainer Dallas Todywalla said that after the race Jockey Neeraj Rawal said that due to the run of the race he travelled deep all the way and had apologized for having ridden a poor race.  He said that Jockey Neeraj Rawal had also informed him that passing 1000 metres he should have gone in and kept the filly right behind the winner, TIMELESS, and thereby saved ground.

Jockey Neeraj Rawal said that he had the option to shift in or stay out, however, it was a split second decision and also, since he was told not to get into traffic problem, he chose to stay on the outside. On being questioned regarding the use of the whip, Jockey Neeraj Rawal said that it was evident on the replay of the race that when he picked the whip the filly did not respond the way she did to hands and heels which prompted him not to use the whip too much.

On going through the betting sheets, it was observed that there was no drift in the odds of RUFFINA. Having considered the submissions made and having viewed the video tape recording of the race in question as also the filly’s previous run during the Mumbai Meeting 2017/18 i.e. Race No.168, the Stipendiary Stewards felt that Jockey Neeraj Rawal could have ridden a better race,  in that, settled the horse, not come so wide all the way and could have been more vigorous in the straight.  Therefore, the matter was reported to the Stewards for such action as they deem fit for riding an ill-judged race.

The Stewards of the Club at their meeting held on Saturday, 22nd September, 2018 interviewed Trainer Dallas Todywalla and Jockey Neeraj Rawal in the above connection and having heard them and having viewed the video recording of Race No.33, decided that no action was called for in the matter..

RE: ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “ZANARA” (NEERAJ RAWAL, DR.7) IN RACE NO.60 – THE RAJARAM CHHATRAPATI TROPHY (1800 METRES) RUN ON 24TH AUGUST, 2018 :

The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer Dallas Todywalla and Jockey Neeraj Rawal on 5th September, 2018 in the above connection. Trainer Dallas Todywalla said that ZANARA had hit the front and won the race last time out and he instructed Jockey Neeraj Rawal to ride her the same way as he did last time i.e. to go to the front and try and get a nice soft lead and ride his own race.  He said that when he was questioned before the race by the Stipes about his instructions, he had said the same thing. He said that unfortunately ZENON cut pace and after the race he fired Jockey Neeraj Rawal for cutting pace with ZENON instead of sitting behind that horse at which time Jockey Neeraj Rawal informed him that his filly was idling so he did not want to pull her back and go behind. Trainer Dallas Todywalla opined that if Jockey Neeraj Rawal had sat behind ZENON he would have won the race by 2 lengths and felt that the Jockey threw away a certain race as such he was a little upset with the Jockey’s riding.

Jockey Neeraj Rawal said that he was asked to take a jump and lead. He said that he was drawn on the extreme outside and the filly jumped out well and he tried to do the same thing that he did last time, i.e. to go to the front, however, this time, ZENON, who was on his inside, did not let him lead and kept cutting pace and hence he sat and controlled the pace and from the 5 furlongs he let his filly roll on as he felt she was idling. Also, he was aware of the filly’s record that whenever she has run from behind she has not performed and has won both her races by going to the front and considering that his danger, ZENON,  was on his inside, he took over the running but in the last half furlong the winner, DROGO, caught up with him.  Jockey Neeraj Rawal admitted that he and Jockey A.Sandesh (ZENON) had gone a bit fast which he did not realize or else he would have given his filly a little bit of a chance.

The video recording of Race No.60 was viewed. Jockey Neeraj Rawal said that he has also ridden ZENON earlier and he  had it at the back of his mind that if he put ZENON under pressure, half his battle would be won over there, however, in doing so, in the bargain he ended up using his filly.

Having considered the submissions made, scrutinizing the Work and Medication Log Books as well as the betting sheets  and having viewed the video tape recording of the race, Jockey Neeraj Rawal was reported to the Stewards for faulty appreciation of the pace thereby placing his horse at a disadvantage (this being his second offence of a similar nature).

The Stewards of the Club at their meeting held on Sunday, 16th September, 2018 interviewed Trainer Dallas Todywalla and Jockey Neeraj Rawal in the above connection and having heard them and having viewed the video recording of Race No.60, decided to give Jockey Neeraj Rawal the benefit of the doubt  and he was warned that on a repetition of a similar offence, the matter will be dealt with severely.
