ADDITIONAL REPORTS:

RE: ENQUIRY INTO THE DRASTIC DIFFERENCE IN THE BODY WEIGHT OF “KANCHENJUNGA” (P.TREVOR, DR.3 – PLACED THIRD) IN RACE NO.23 – THE ARTS PLATE - RUN ON 4TH AUGUST, 2018 AS COMPARED TO ITS PREVIOUS START IN MUMBAI IN RACE NO.246 RUN ON 25TH MARCH, 2018 :

The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer P.Shroff in the above connection on 11th August, 2018. He explained that KANCHENJUNGA was a 3-year-old and in Mumbai the filly had raced only in her age group. However, coming into the current Pune Season, considering that she would be racing against older horses in open class, he felt that her previous weight where she competed with her own age group was too less (414 kg was underweight), hence he had worked on the filly to make her stronger whereby she had now put on condition and weighed 457 kg in Race No.23 (43 kg extra).  He added that some 2/3-year-old horses tend to put on weight during the off season.

On being asked about the work pattern, Trainer P.Shroff said that the filly has had three to four workouts before coming into this race and her final workout was with AUBURN on 1st August, 2018 where she worked well. He said that this was the filly’s first run on the Pune Track in open Class IV.

Having considered the submissions made and keeping in mind the recent cases regarding the fluctuations in the body weight of some horses, the matter was placed before the Stewards for such action as deemed fit.

The Stewards of the Club at their meeting held on Sunday, 16th September, 2018 interviewed Trainer P.Shroff in the above connection and having heard him and having viewed the video recording of Race No.13, directed the Stipendiary Stewards to inform Trainer P.Shroff that whilst the Stewards have taken note of the explanation tendered by him, they were of the view that in such a case where the horse has gained unusual weight as compared to its previous run, he should bring the same to the notice of the Stipes at the Declaration stage.

RE: ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “SOUTHPAW” IN RACE NO.13 – THE J.E.HUGHES TROPHY - RUN ON 26TH JULY, 2018 :

The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer Faisal A.Abbas and Apprentice K.Nazil in the above connection. Trainer Faisal A.Abbas said that his instructions were to take a jump and if nobody goes to the front then he should go to the front. He said that since Trainer Narendra Lagad had two horses running in this race, he had expected one of them to go to the front and in such an event, he had also asked the Jockey not to let them tear away but to sit on their haunches and take over the running in the straight and to do his best. Apprentice K.Nazil confirmed the instructions.

When asked to explain the variation in the weight of the horse, Trainer Faisal A.Abbas said that in Race No.307 run at Mumbai, the gelding weighed 406 kg. and in the race in question, he weighed 446 kg (40 kg. extra). He explained that the horse had won three races in Mumbai starting from the lower class and now he had to race with very fast quality horses and as such he had worked on muscling up the horse and since the horse had worked well he fancied the horse in this race. Arising out of this, Trainer Faisal A.Abbas was asked to explain the work pattern of the horse, to which, he stated that the gelding had four work outs before the race, one  of which was with ABBEY and the horse had worked well and hence he had fancied his horse. To a specific question, he said that he did not have the practice of taking the weight of the horses during the off season and this was the first time the horse was weighed after his last run at Mumbai. Trainer Faisal A.Abbas’ attention was drawn to the performance of SOUTHPAW during the Mumbai Season 2017/18, to which he agreed that SOUTHPAW had beaten WILD FIRE in Mumbai, however, after his horse’s last win in Mumbai he got a stiff penalty whereby there was a reversal in the handicap in the race in question and also WILD FIRE had the benefit of a run during the current Pune Meeting. Tr.Faisal A.Abbas was informed that whatever he had explained above, he should have taken the same into consideration before fancying his horse and tipping it and it cannot be an afterthought. Trainer Faisal A.Abbas said that there were only two Five Furlong races, one on 26th July, 2018 and the other on 7th September, 2018 and he chose the first option.

The video recording of Race No.13 was viewed and Apprentice K.Nazil was asked to explain his riding. He said that soon after the jump out, he scrubbed the horse and got into position as instructed i.e. he sat on the haunches of WILD FIRE and turning for home, he rode out and did his best.

On going through the betting sheets, it was observed that there was a drift in the odds of SOUTHPAW from 18/10 to 5/2. Having considered the submissions made, scrutinizing the Log Books and having viewed the video tape recording of the race in question as also the horse’s previous run i.e. Race No.307 run during the Mumbai Meeting 2017/18, the Stipendiary Stewards feel that App.K.Nazil has followed the instructions and ridden out the horse. However, the Stipes are of the opinion that whatever explanation Trainer Faisal A.Abbas has now put forward, he should have thought of the same prior to fancying/tipping his horse, hence they were reporting the matter to the Stewards for such action as deemed fit as such things lead to racing getting a bad name and brings the sport to disrepute.

The Stewards of the Club at their meeting held on Sunday, 16th September, 2018 interviewed Trainer Faisal A.Abbas in the above connection and having heard him and having viewed the video recording of Race No.13, directed the Stipendiary Stewards to inform Trainer Faisal A.Abbas that whilst the Stewards have taken note of the explanation tendered by him, they were of the view that in such a case where the horse has gained unusual weight as compared to its previous run, he should bring the same to the notice of the Stipes at the Declaration stage.
