ADDITIONAL REPORTS :

ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “D’ACCORD” (DRAWN-8)  IN RACE NO.125 – THE ESTONIA PLATE (DIV.II) – RUN ON THURSDAY, 19th JANUARY, 2017 :

The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer Altamaash A. Ahmed and Jockey Neeraj Rawal in the above connection. The video of the race was viewed and when questioned, Trainer Altamaash A. Ahmed said that the instructions were given by the Owner. The Owner felt that if the filly went to the front she might pack up, so he instructed the Jockey not to go to the front but give the mare a chance by settling her and coming into the straight to do his best. When asked about his observation of the race. Trainer Altamaash A. Ahmed said that the Jockey sat a bit too far behind and also waited too long to make his move and that may have cost her the race. He felt that the Jockey could have ridden a better race.

Jockey Neeraj Rawal said that his first thought was to ride from the front, however, the Owner instructed him to drop her out and ride under cover because in her last start she went to the front and gave up. He said that after the start there was a wall of horses in front and rounding the bend the eventual winner, TOP WIZARD, was in front of him. However, when TOP WIZARD quickened, his mare took time to get going despite his urgings and in the straight when he pulled out the whip, the filly shifted in and out. He said that he had done his best.

The matter was reported to the Stewards for such action as may deem fit.

The Stewards of the Club at their meeting held on 5th February, 2017 interviewed Jockey Neeraj Rawal in the above connection and having heard him and having viewed the video of the race, decided to give him the benefit of the doubt for riding an ill-judged race.

RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE COMPARATIVE PERFORMANCE OF “SIR DESMOND” (P.TREVOR, DRAWN-8) IN RACE NO 126 THE PLEASURE HUNT PLATE (DIV.II) (1400 METRES) - RUN ON 19th JANUARY 2017 WHICH THE GELDING WON AS COMPARED TO HIS PREVIOUS RUN IN RACE NO.97 - THE ANMOL PREET PLATE (1600 METRES) RIDDEN BY JOCKEY C.S.JODHA (DRAWN-1) – RUN ON 5th JANUARY, 2017 WHERE HE WAS UNPLACED :

The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer S. K. Sunderji in the above connection. He was asked to explain the improvement of approximately 11 ˝ lengths shown by his horse vis-ŕ-vis the common horse SECRET FLAME in a short span of 14 days as also the betting trend in both the races.

Trainer S. K. Sunderji said that SIR DESMOND is a very difficult horse to train and was withdrawn in the past for fractious behavior at the Starting Gate and he was a maiden prior to his win in Rae No.126. He said that in Race No.97 run over 1600 metres he had instructed Jockey C. S. Jodha to hit the front and to do his best and the gelding ran a suggestive race wherein he led till the last furlong and thereafter gave up. He said that in that race, Jockey C. S. Jodha went to the front from the word go and it was a fast run race which is reflected in the fractional timings for the first five furlongs. After that race the Owner asked him to run the horse in a 1400 metres race and on being pointed out that there was no suitable race for about a month other than the race in question, the Owner insisted on running the horse in this race and said that if the horse wins, he was willing to come before the Stewards to explain.

Trainer S. K. Sunderji said that he wanted to again declare Jockey C. S. Jodha in Race No.126 over 1400 metres, however, he was suspended and therefore he opted to declare Jockey P. Trevor and considering that in the previous race over 1600 metres the horse had led the till the last furlong, he instructed Jockey P. Trevor to dictate the pace but not to make it a very fast pace which instructions the Jockey followed precisely and the horse won the race. He said that this being a Division-II race it was a weaker set which is reflected in the timing of the race. As regards the common horse, Tr. S. K. Sunderji opined that SECRET FLAME has won two races, both over 1600 metres and probably 1400 metres was a bit sharp for her. He said he had no control over the odds, however, the odds had drifted in Race No.126.

Having considered the submissions made, viewing the video of both the races and scrutinizing the betting sheets and keeping in mind 1) that the horse has shown an improvement of approximately 11 ˝ lengths in a short span of 14 days vis-ŕ-vis the common horse SECRET FLAME and 2) the horse was at longer odds in Race No.97 and was fancied in Race No.126 which he won,  the matter was reported to the Stewards for such action as they deem fit specially as the Trainer stated that the Owner wished to have an audience with the Stewards as he had instructed to run the horse.

The Stewards of the Club at their meeting held on 5th February, 2017 interviewed Trainer S. K. Sunderji who was accompanied by the Owner, Mr. Akhtar Adamji Peerbhoy. Having heard them and having viewed the video of both the races the Stewards were not entirely satisfied with the explanation tendered by Tr. S. K. Sunderji. However, taking an over all view and keeping in mind the extraneous factors that there was no 1400 metres race for Horses rated 1 to 26, advertised in the Prospectus for the next one month and his reason for declaring Jockey P. Trevor, the Stewards decided to give Tr. S. K. Sunderji the benefit of grave doubt and no action was initiated in the matter.

RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE CHANGE OF SAFETY VEST – JOCKEY Y.S.SRINATH, RIDER OF “BROTHERSOFTHEWIND” IN RACE NO.92 – THE KHEEM SINGH GOLD CUP – RUN ON 1st JANUARY, 2017 :

The Stewards of the Club at their meeting held on Sunday, 5th February, 2017 interviewed Jockey Y. S. Srinath and having heard him as also the Stipendiary Stewards, were not satisfied with the explanation tendered by Jockey Y. S. Srinath. The Stewards noted that the Safety Vest used by Jockey Y. S. Srinath was of an unapproved standard, which he himself admitted before the Stewards and apologized for the same. Therefore, the Stewards decided to fine him a sum of Rs.10,000/-.

ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “SHIVALIK SKIES”  IN RACE NO.97 – THE ANMOL PREET PLATE (1600 METRES)– RUN ON THURSDAY, 5th JANUARY, 2017 :

The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer Vijay Kasbekar and Jockey Amyn Merchant in the above connection. The video of the race was viewed and when questioned, Trainer Vijay Kasbekar said that he had instructed the Jockey to ride his own race. He said that the SHIVALIK SKIES was still a maiden and the Owner had decided to retire her from racing after this race, however, the mare ran well with a hood to finish fourth in this race and seeing this run the Owner changed his mind and decided not to retire her. He said that he was satisfied with the Jockey’s riding and in future would continue to race her with a hood over the same distance and declare the same Jockey as she goes well with him.

Jockey Amyn Merchant said that SHIVALIK SKIES had not shown any performance in the past and she was still a maiden. The mare had changed stables thrice, she was initially with Trainer C. D. Katrak, then she went to Trainer Adil Dajee and now she was with Trainer Vijay Kasbekar. He said that he had ridden the mare earlier when she was in charge of Tr. C. D. Katrak  where she was a favourite but ran unplaced. He said that the mare does not have early speed, as such he settled her comfortably and kept niggling all the way and coming into the straight he had ridden her out, however, there was a wall of horses in front and he did not get a clear run. He said that he had done his best. Jockey Amyn Merchant was told that he could have positioned his mount better and ridden out more vigorously. To a specific question, he said that he was not retained by the owner Mr. Ramesh Chandra Mehta.

Having heard the submissions made and viewing the video of the race and keeping in mind that the mare had no previous form and she was at longer odds, no action was initiated beyond informing Trainer Vijay Kasbekar and Jockey Amyn Merchant that the enquiry was being kept open and a close watch would be kept on the future running of this filly.

ENQUIRY INTO THE POOR PERFORMANCE OF “TCHIBOUELA” IN RACE NO.110 – THE LADY MADONNA PLATE (1400 METRES)– RUN ON THURSDAY, 12th JANUARY, 2017 :

The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer Faisal A. Abbas in the above connection. He said that he had instructed Jockey G. Amit to sit well up but he found himself in front then to ride in the same manner as he rode last time out. He said that the horse had put on weight after his last run as he was eating well and he looked much better and he was a bit disappointed with this run. However, on hindsight he felt that the horses who finished first and second in the race in question, viz. FLAG FLYING and PILATUS were far superior animals as compared to his horse who was just a Class-IV horse. He said that in the previous race i.e. Race No.59, TCHIBOUELA beat ISINIT who subsequently ran as a favourite with Jockey A. Sandesh up and finished unplaced, which goes to show the form of horses he beat last time out. When asked to explain the drift in odds, Trainer Faisal A. Abbas said that he has no control over the odds, however, the timing of the race he won beating ISINIT was poor and subsequently ISINIT performed poorly, which could be one of the reasons for the drift in odds.

Having heard the submissions made and having viewed the video of the race, the explanation tendered by the Trainer has been noted for future reference.

ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “PINK PANTHER” IN RACE NO.114 – THE RAJPIPLA CUP (1400 METRES)– RUN ON THURSDAY, 12th JANUARY, 2017 :

The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer Faisal A. Abbas in the above connection. The video of the race was viewed and when questioned, Trainer Faisal A. Abbas said that he had instructed Jockey S. Zervan to go to the front or sit well up and to do his best. When asked about his observation of the race, Trainer Faisal A. Abbas said that ARAKAWAH set a very fast pace and PINK PANTHER was unable to pace with him. He said that Jockey S. Zervan had ridden flat out but the horse was flat footed and he was disappointed with this run. He said that the horse had returned sound, however, the Jockey had informed him after the race that the horse made gurgling sound during the race as such he had the horse scoped after the race and no abnormality was detected. He said that the horse has won only one race over 1400 metres in Class IV and the Jockey felt that the horse probably needed this race and told him not to be disappointed since the horse was running after a long gap and in a higher class. When asked as to why the horse had raced after such a long gap, Trainer Faisal A. Abbas said that the races were going void.

Jockey S. Zervan was not available for questioning since he was riding in Chennai.

Having heard Trainer Faisal A. Abbas and having viewed the video of the race, the enquiry has been kept open and a close watch would be kept on the future running of the horse.

ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “NIGHTFALL”  IN RACE NO.119 – THE LACHMAN K.ADVANI & MAYA L.ADVANI TROPHY (1600 METRES)– RUN ON SUNDAY, 15th JANUARY, 2017 :

The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer C. D. Katrak and Jockey Amyn Merchant in the above connection. The video of the race was viewed and when questioned, Trainer C. D. Katrak said that he had instructed Jockey Amyn Merchant to take a good jump and sit in mid bunch and to do his best in the straight. He said that after the race, the Jockey informed him that in the straight there was a wall of horses in front and he did not get a clear run. To a question, he said that he would probably race the horse next after a gap of three weeks to a month.

Jockey Amyn Merchant confirmed the instructions. He said that the horse has a habit of stopping, hence he kept niggling at the horse throughout the race and maintained his position wherever he could and entering the straight there was a wall of horses in front and he did not get a clear run, however, he had done his best. When asked as to why he did not make more efforts to sit in mid bunch as instructed, Jockey Amyn Merchant said the horse lacked early speed and was trying to go out. To another question, he said that the horse did not respond to his pushing in the straight and hence he did not want to punish the horse unnecessarily.

Having heard Trainer C. D. Katrak and Jockey Amyn Merchant and having viewed the video of the race, the enquiry has been kept open and a close watch would be kept on the future running of the horse.

ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “BACKSTREET BAY” IN RACE NO.124 – THE MOHAMMED RASHEED BEG & RAHAT BEG TROPHY (1000 METRES)– RUN ON SUNDAY, 15th JANUARY, 2017 :

The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer C. D. Katrak and Jockey Amyn Merchant in the above connection. The video of the race was viewed and when questioned, Trainer C. D. Katrak said that he had instructed the Jockey to sit well up and to do his best and also use the whip since the mare needed it. He said that the mare received severe interference at the start and thereafter, in an effort to sit well up, the Jockey travelled too wide or else he would have finished better by a length to  1 ˝ length and at best may have finished fourth.

The video of the race was viewed and it was pointed out to Trainer C. D. Katrak that the Jockey was feeble in his riding effort in the straight. Trainer C. D. Katrak admitted that if the Jockey was more vigorous, the horse may have finished Third and said that this question would be best answered by the Jockey himself.

Jockey Amyn Merchant confirmed the instructions and added that he received interference at the start and thereafter he pushed his mount to sit well up and coming into the straight when he made his move, his mount did not improve, she was there and there, and in the last 50 metres the reins slipped out of his hands. To another question, Jockey Amyn Merchant said that there were horses on his inside and hence he was forced to travel wide in the early part.

Having heard Trainer C. D. Katrak and Jockey Amyn Merchant and having viewed the video of the race, the enquiry has been kept open and a close watch would be kept on the future running of the horse.

RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “MONZA” (APP.S.A.AMIT,  DRAWN-6) IN RACE NO 125 - THE ESTONIA PLATE (DIV.II) - RUN ON 19th JANUARY 2017 :

The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer Adhirajsingh Jodha and Apprentice S. A. Amit in the above connection. The video of the race was viewed and when questioned, Tr. Adhirajsingh Jodha said that he had instructed App. S. A. Amit to jump out and hold the horse up a little bit and take cover and coming into the straight to pull him to the outside and to do his best.

App. S. A. Amit confirmed the instructions and added that he sat in the mid bunch and coming into the straight he had a wall of horses in front of him, as such he pulled the horse out and did his best.

RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “REMEMBER THE TIME” (R.AJINKYA, DRAWN-8) IN RACE NO 132 THE VICTORIOUS PLATE - RUN ON 19th JANUARY 2017 :

The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer S. K. Sunderji and Jockey R. Ajinkya in the above connection. The video of the race was viewed and when questioned, Tr. S. K. Sunderji said that he had instructed the Jockey to jump and sit in the mid bunch and to do his best. Also, he had told the Jockey not to flog the horse as he had soundness issues, in the past one year he had problems and hence he was unable to race him. He said that REMEMBER THE TIME last won a race on 6th December, 2015. Thereafter, the horse raced during the Pune Meeting 2016 on 15th October, 2016 and returned sore and did not race after that till the race in question i.e. in the last 13 months he raced only twice. When asked about his observation of the race, Trainer S. K. Sunderji said that the Jockey has urged the horse but he remained there and there and finished second last. To another question, Tr. S. K. Sunderji said that he planned to race the horse again on the Derby Weekend in a 1200 metres race and since Jockey R. Ajinkya was suspended during that week, he would engage some other Jockey.

Jockey R. Ajinkya confirmed the instructions and said that his horse was hanging in after jump out. Also, he received an interference from GREEK GODDESS (App. H. Zeeshan) after jump out and he did his best.

Having heard the submissions and viewing the video of the race, the Stipendiary Stewards were not satisfied with the explanation tendered by the Trainer and he has been informed that the enquiry was being kept open and a close watch will be kept on the running pattern of the horse and in future if the horse has soundness issues, he must ask for a Mock Race as the Rules are very clear that every horse must be ridden out fully in every race.

RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “ZANZIBAAR” (YASH NARREDU, DRAWN-7) IN RACE NO 138 - THE MIRCHI MILLION - RUN ON 22nd JANUARY 2017 :

The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer Nirad Karanjawala and Jockey Yash Narredu in the above connection. The video of the race was viewed and when questioned, Tr. Nirad Karanjawala said that during the Pune Meeting 2016 the horse used to run well up, however, since shifting to Mumbai the horse has not been able to sit well up, therefore, he had put on “Blinkers” and in the previous outing he had instructed Jockey J. Chinoy to sit well up but he was unable to do so as the horse was not moving. Therefore, in the race in question, he instructed Jockey Yash Narredu to take a jump and sit wherever the horse was comfortable and to do his best.

Jockey Yash Narredu confirmed the instructions and said that the horse lacked initial speed and thereafter there was a wall of horses in front hence he settled the horse on the inside and took the shortest way home. Thereafter, coming into the straight, he was behind ROSELLA (Y. S. Srinath) and pulled him out and did his best.

Having heard the submissions made and viewing the video of the race, the Stipendiary Stewards were not satisfied with the Jockey’s riding efforts and the Trainer and Jockey have been informed that the enquiry was being kept open and a close watch will be kept on the future running of the horse and the Jockey was advised to be more vigorous.
