ADDITIONAL REPORTS :

RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING AS ALSO THE INCIDENT OF WHIP LOSS BY JOCKEY SANTOSH.G ON HIS MOUNT “ICE ANGLE” IN RACE NO.85 - THE DAMODARDAS C.SHAH CUP - RUN ON 29th DECEMBER, 2016:

The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer Bezan Chenoy and Jockey Santosh G. in the above connection. The video of the race was viewed and when questioned, Tr. Bezan Chenoy said that he had instructed the Jockey to sit well up as the filly runs better with a lead and to do his best. When asked about his observation of the race, Trainer Bezan Chenoy said that if the Jockey had not shifted out turning for home and instead had followed the eventual winner into the straight, he would have easily won the race. He added that the Jockey had informed him after the race that the filly was shying from the other runners.

The video of the race as also the incident of whip fall (normal as well as slow motion) was viewed.

Jockey Santosh G confirmed the instructions and added that coming into the straight he got into the filly and gave her a tap and thereafter in an effort to change his grip from the backhand position to the fore hand position, the whip had slipped out of his hand. To another question, he said that his filly was shying from the horse on his inside. However, this statement of the Jockey was not borne out from the video recording.

Having heard the submissions made by Jockey Santosh G. in conjunction with that of the Trainer’s views and having viewed the video of the race as also the incident of whip fall, in normal as well as slow motion, Jockey Santosh G. was reported to the Stewards for incompetent riding.

The Stewards of the Club at their meeting held on Thursday, 19th January, 2017 interviewed Trainer Bezan Chenoy and Jockey Santosh G. in the above connection and. having heard them and having viewed the video of Race No.85 as also the incident of the whip fall, the Stewards decided to give Jockey Santosh G. the benefit of the doubt for the loss of whip. However, the Stewards were not satisfied with his riding on ICE ANGEL and held him guilty of incompetent riding. In that, he stated that his mount was shying from the horse on his inside which was not borne out on the video. It was observed that the filly was travelling well on the inside but he chose to make his move from the outside and thereafter, when the filly started drifting out he did not take corrective measures and travelled wide thus losing valuable ground which may have cost him the race, the verdict being ¾ length. Further, Trainer Bezan Chenoy also felt that turning for home, the Jockey should have followed the front horse, SPORTO, and if he had made his move from the inside of SPORTO instead of coming from the outside, he may have won the race. However, considering his clean record, the Stewards took a lenient view and decided to suspend his Jockey’s license for 4th February, 2017 for incompetent riding (permitted to ride work/mock race).

RE : APPEAL FROM JOCKEY R. AJINKYA AGAINST THE DECISION OF THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS IN RESPECT OF SUSPENSION OF HIS JOCKEY’S LICENSE W.E.F. 04/02/2017 TO 05/02/2017 FOR CARELESS RIDING ON “RICH N RARE” IN RACE NO.115 – THE ISN’T SHE SPECIAL PLATE – RUN ON 12TH JANUARY, 2017 :

The Stewards of the Club at their meeting held on Thursday, 19th January, 2017 interviewed Jockey R. Ajinkya and his Spokesman, Mr. S. K. Sunderji, in the above connection and having heard them and having viewed the video of the race, decided to reject the appeal.

RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE IMPROVED PERFORMANCE OF “FLAG FLYING” (N.NADEEM) IN RACE NO 110 THE LADY MADONNA PLATE (1400 METRES) - RUN ON 12th JANUARY 2017 WHICH THE GELDING WON AS COMPARED TO HIS PREVIOUS RUN IN RACE NO.73 - THE BOURBON KING PLATE (DIV.I) (1200 METRES) RIDDEN BY JOCKEY VIKRAM JODHA – RUN ON THURSDAY, 22nd DECEMBER, 2016 WHERE HE WAS UNPLACED :

The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer H.J.Antia and Jockey Vikram Jodha in the above connection. Trainer H. J. Antia said that this was the third start of the gelding and he has been showing improvement in each one of them. He said that the horse was a novice and furthermore he lacks sound confirmation, hence, he decided to use a senior Jockey with experience to ride the gelding in his first two starts so that he could educate the horse. As for his third run, he said that it was a race where Jockeys were not permitted to carry whips, therefore, he declared Apprentice N. Nadeem and claimed 5 kg. allowance while the other prominent runners in this were ridden by full Jockeys and that gave him an added advantage.

To another question, Trainer H. J. Antia said that in his first start i.e. Race No.36 over 1000 metres, the gelding had finished at the backend, however, in his next start in Race No 73 over 1200 metres, the gelding had shown improvement and finished on in the straight to be 6th and this run had prompted him to race him again in the race in question as he felt that the gelding would do better over 1400 metres. On being questioned about the change in the pattern of running, Trainer H. J. Antia said that the gelding lacked early speed and also his previous two starts were over shorter trips.

When questioned, Jockey Vikram Jodha said that the horse lacked initial speed and in his previous start in Race No.73 he had met with an interference soon after the start and also in the straight.

Having heard the submissions made and viewing the video recording of the race in question as also the horse’s previous run, the Stipendiary Stewards are of the view that the pattern of running was different on both occasions and also the riding efforts of Jockey Vikram Jodha were found wanting in Race No.73. Further, there was considerable betting in the race he won as compared to his previous start. As such, the matter was reported to the Stewards for such action as they deem fit.

The Stewards of the Club at their meeting held on Thursday, 19th January, 2017 interviewed Trainer H. J. Antia in the above connection and having heard the submissions made and having viewed the video of both the races, were not satisfied with the explanation tendered by him with regard to the improved performance of his charge FLAG FLYING in Race No.110 as compared to his previous run in Race No.73. The Stewards noted that :-

i)                     The pattern of running of the horse was different in both the races, i.e. Race No.73 over 1200 metres, when ridden by Jockey Vikram Jodha, FLAG FLYING was settled behind and ran unplaced. Thereafter, in Race No.110 over 1400 metres, with Apprentice N.Nadeem, the horse was positioned well up and won the race by a widening margin of 7 ½ lengths thus showing tremendous improvement in a matter of three weeks.

ii)                   In Race No.73 the horse was at long odds and subsequently he won well fancied in Race No.110.

iii)                  The Stewards noted Trainer H. J. Antia’s past record wherein action was initiated against him several times for similar offences of Improved/Comparative performance of his horses.

Therefore, the Stewards of the Club decided to fine him a sum of Rs.50,000/- for the improved performance of his charge FLAG FLYING in Race No.110 run on 12th January, 2017 as compared to its previous run in Race No.73 run on 22nd December, 2016.

RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “ANOTHER CHANCE” IN RACE NO.113 – THE RIYASAT PLATE (DIV.II) – RUN ON 12th JANUARY, 2017 :

The Stipendiary Stewards reported that Tr. Magansingh P. Jodha was questioned in the above connection. He said that the filly had soundness issues and was still a maiden. He added that the filly was not up to the standard for racing and the owner had asked him to send her to the stud. Since the filly was subsequently retired to stud, the enquiry was closed.
