The Board felt that Jockey P. Trevor’s riding was not mala fide and that the filly had responded after he had put the whip down. The Board was of the unanimous view that he rode his best and did not agree with the Stewards’ finding that he rode an injudicious race. Therefore, the Board of Appeal, unanimously decided to allow the appeal and set aside the decision of the Stewards of the Club. His Deposit for the Appeal was ordered to be refunded.

RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “MYRTLEWOOD” IN RACE NO.40 - THE EVE CHAMPION TROPHY (GR.3) (ABOUT) 2000 METRES – RUN ON 14th AUGUST, 2016 :

Trainer P. Shroff and Jockey P. S. Chouhan were questioned immediately after the race in the above connection. Jockey P. S. Chouhan stated that the filly was slightly slowly away and he immediately tried to catch up with the field, at which stage the filly got keen and he had to then try and settle her and it was unfortunate and under the circumstances, the filly ran a poor race.

When questioned, Tr. P. Shroff said that ideally he would have liked the filly to be settled alongside JIGSAW, however, as the filly was slowly away, “all the planning and strategy went up in the air” and the Jockey had to improve and ride the filly to the best of his ability. To a question, Tr. P. Shroff said that THE UNICORN is a genuine horse and likes galloping in front and he was definitely not expecting this result.

After reviewing all angles of the race in question as also the previous races of MYRTLEWOOD, Trainer P. Shroff was again questioned and it was brought to his attention that even though the filly was slightly slowly away, keeping in mind her past races where she has always come from the back, the Stipendiary Stewards felt that the Jockey need not have got her keen and later fought with her and then again try to improve, which led to her poor performance. Trainer P. Shroff agreed with the Stipes view and said that in future he will tell his Jockeys that in case the filly is slowly away then not to do what happened in this particular race.

Since the Club’s V.O. reported that MYRTLEWOOD had returned sore after the race, no action was initiated by the Stipendiary Stewards.
