ADDITIONAL REPORTS:

RE: ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “MOROCCAN” IN RACE NO.1 – THE WELCOME PLATE RUN ON THURSDAY, 19TH NOVEMBER, 2015 :

The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer Faisal A.Abbas and App.R.Ajinkya in the above connection. App.R.Ajinkya stated that he was instructed to sit in 2nd/3rd position and coming into the straight to do his best. Trainer Faisal A.Abbas confirmed the instructions. App.R.Ajinkya said that he rode as per his instructions and coming into the straight, he took over the running but thereafter he felt that the other horse was gaining ground on him so he looked over his shoulder to see whether he would be able to hold on as the winning post was fast approaching. The video of the race was viewed and it was pointed out to App.R.Ajinkya that he continuously looked back from 300 metres five times. Further, in the last part he stopped using the whip at a crucial stage for no apparent reason and was not vigorous in his riding effort on a first favourite horse and this probably cost him the race. Trainer Faisal A.Abbas concurred with the Stipes view. App.R.Ajinkya reiterated that coming into the straight he felt that the other horse was gaining on him so he looked back to see whether he would be able to hold on. He added that when he first pulled his whip out in the right hand, it got entangled with the reins and thereafter he used the whip twice but he felt that the whip was not making contact with the horse so he switched his whip to the left hand and used it, but again the whip did not make contact with the horse, so, in order to save his energy, he put his whip down and rode out hands and heels and in the final stages of the race he was a little excited as the other horse was challenging him, so he again looked back to see whether he would make it to the post. It was put to App.R.Ajinkya that since he was approaching the winning post what was the idea of saving his energy and putting his whip down, to which he had no answer. Tr.Faisal A.Abbas informed that he had categorically instructed the Apprentice not to look back even if he was winning by a wider margin, which was confirmed by the Apprentice.

Not being satisfied with the explanation tendered by App.R.Ajinkya, he was reported to the Stewards for unsatisfactory riding.

The Stewards at their meeting held on 22nd November, 2015 interviewed Trainer Faisal A.Abbas and App.R.Ajinkya who was accompanied by his Master, Tr.S.K.Sunderji. Having heard the submissions made and having viewed the video of the race, the Stewards were not satisfied with the explanation tendered by App.R.Ajinkya. In that, he continuously looked back from 300 metres five times. Further, in the last part he stopped using the whip at a crucial stage for no apparent reason and was not vigorous in his riding effort on a first favourite horse and this probably cost him the race since the verdict was a neck. Trainer Faisal A.Abbas expressed his dissatisfaction with the riding of App.R.Ajinkya and his Master, Tr.S.K.Sunderji confirmed that the Apprentice was feeble in his riding efforts in the straight.

Taking an overall view and keeping in mind that R.Ajinkya was an up-coming apprentice, the Stewards took a lenient view and gave him the benefit of the doubt for the charge of “not permitting his mount to run on merits” and held him guilty of “unsatisfactory riding” and decided to suspend his Apprentice Jockey’s license w.e.f. 10th December, 2015 to 20th December, 2015 (both days inclusive) (permitted to ride work/mock race). Further, he was asked to improve his riding skills.

RE: ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “VICTORIA HARBOUR” IN RACE NO.5 – THE SIR CHARLES FORBES TROPHY RUN ON THURSDAY, 19TH NOVEMBER, 2015 :

The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer Dallas Todywalla and Jockey Colm O’Donoghue in the above connection. The Jockey stated that he was instructed to ride his own race, however, the owners had plans to run the filly in The Indian 1000 Guineas (Gr.1), as such, they wanted the filly to be settled and come from behind. The Trainer confirmed the instructions. The Jockey said that the filly jumped out inwards and thereafter the pace was slow and he was forced to settle her behind STRATEGIC MOVE (A.Sandesh) who kept dropping back on to him. He said that the filly makes a sound from her throat when she gallops and he had informed the same to Dr.Anil Kumar after the race.

Trainer Dallas Todywalla said that in the past the filly has always raced from the front in short distance races, however, they had plans to run the filly in The Indian 1000 Guineas (Gr.I) and wanted her to be settled and come from behind and the pace was slow in this race. He confirmed that the filly has a poor wind passage and had been scoped on many occasions. He said that Dr.Mirza had advised that in view of the plans to race her in The Indian 1000 Guineas (Gr.1), not to go in for a surgery because if she is operated upon, she may not be able to run in The Indian 1000 Guineas (Gr.1). In order to substantiate that the filly did have wind problem, Tr.Dallas Todywalla showed a text message he received from Dr.Khambatta after the race in question enquiring when he wanted the filly to be operated upon. The Trainer added that the filly raced with a Tongue Strap for the first time. To a specific query, Trainer Dallas Todywalla agreed that he should have brought to the notice of the Stipendiary Stewards before the race that he intended to change the running pattern.

Having heard the Trainer and Jockey and viewing the video of the race, the Stipendiary Stewards were not satisfied with the riding of Jockey Colm O’Donoghue as he made his move very late and that too from the wide outside and lacked in his riding effort on a fancied runner. Further,  the Trainer should have brought to the notice of the Stipendiary Stewards before the race that he intended to change the running pattern in this race, more-so with the filly being a favourite, which he failed to do.

Not being satisfied with the explanation tendered by Trainer Dallas Todywalla and Jockey Colm O’Donoghue, they were reported to the Stewards for unsatisfactory running and riding of VICTORIA HARBOUR in this race.

The Stewards at their meeting held on 22nd November, 2015 interviewed Trainer Dallas Todywalla and Jockey Colm O’Donoghue. Having considered all the submissions made and having viewed the video of the race, the Stewards were not satisfied with the explanation tendered by Jockey Colm O’Donoghue. The Stewards noted that VICTORIA HARBOUR has won all her three races going to the front. In the race in question, the Jockey was riding a fancied runner and conceding that the connections, including himself, wanted the filly to be settled and come from behind this time as they planned to run her in The Indian 1000 Guineas (Gr.1), however, it was felt that he could have sat in a better position and come the shortest way home and he lacked in his riding effort. Further, he hardly used the whip in the straight and this sort of riding from a Jockey of his calibre was not acceptable.

Taking an overall view and keeping in mind the submissions made, the Stewards took a lenient view and gave Jockey Colm O’Donoghue the benefit of the doubt for the charge of “unsatisfactory riding” and held him guilty of riding an injudicious race and fined him a sum of Rs.20,000/-.

Further, the Stewards were also not satisfied with the explanation tendered by Trainer Dallas Todywalla. He was informed that If the connections wanted to change her running tactics, there are Mock Races available for such trials and such experiments in a race bring racing to disrepute as the racing public can feel let down or he could have raced the filly over a longer trip and not in its pet distance. Further, even the Stipendiary Stewards were not informed before the race about the change of running pattern for which Tr.Dallas Todywalla admitted his mistake.

Taking an overall view and keeping in mind the submissions made by him, the Stewards took a lenient view and instead of suspending his Trainer’s license, they fined him a sum of Rs.20,000/- for unsatisfactory running of his charge.

RE: ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “ENTHRALLING” IN RACE NO.6 – THE J V SHUKLA – ASHWAMITRA PLATE RUN ON THURSDAY, 19TH NOVEMBER, 2015 :

The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer Imtiaz A.Sait and Jockey Colm O’Donoghue in the above connection. Trainer Imtiaz A.Sait said that the filly raced four times in her career and had good form coming into the race. He said that the filly went to the front in all her previous starts, in her first start she went to the front but her saddle slipped and she ran third to ITSCARO, thereafter she won two races and finished second in her fourth run. However, in this race, there were too many fast horses, hence he had instructed the Jockey that let somebody give her the lead and his observation was that the Jockey tried his bit to go to the front but the filly did not respond. When asked as to why the Jockey had not used the whip even once, the Trainer said that the Jockey had informed him after the race that the filly was disinterested. He said that Jockey Colm O’Donoghue had a choice to ride his filly ENTHRALLING or ARIZONA SUN and he chose to ride his filly.  He said that the filly had come back sound but racing in the hot afternoon may have been the reason for her poor performance. He said that the filly is not dry coated, she is much more docile than she used to be as she is a hyper/temperamental filly, not that it may have made any difference.

Jockey Colom O’Donoghue stated that he had a bad draw and the filly did not have the initial speed. He said that the Trainer had told him that if the filly does not go to the front easily, then to settle her. He said that the filly was disinterested.

After reviewing the past races and keeping in mind that in Race No.202 run on 16th October, 2015 at Pune the common horse ARIZONA SUN (Winner) had finished behind ENTHRALLING and also the fact that Colm O’Donoghue is a top Jockey, the Stipendiary Stewards were not satisfied with the explanation tendered by him as they felt that he should have made more of an effort to get into a front position as the horse has done in the past. Further, in the straight, he gave up too soon and has not ridden out in the last furlong. As such, the matter was reported to the Stewards for such action as deemed fit.

The Stewards at their meeting held on 22nd November, 2015 interviewed Trainer Imtiaz A.Sait and Jockey Colm O’Donoghue. Having heard the submissions made and having viewed the video of the race in question as also the previous run of the filly i.e. Race No.202 run at Pune, the Stewards were not satisfied with the explanation tendered by Jockey Colm O’Donoghue and held him guilty of unsatisfactory riding on his mount. The Stewards noted that ENTHRALLING is a speedy filly who raced four times, having won two races and placed twice going to the front. In the race in question, the Jockey did not make sufficient effort after the start to sit well up as instructed. Further, his effort in the straight was feeble, he did not even use the whip and gave up too soon by not riding out at all in the last one furlong of the race and such riding from a Jockey of his calibre on a fancied runner, was not acceptable. Therefore, the Stewards decided to suspend his Jockey’s license w.e.f. 10th December, 2015 to 20th December, 2015 (both days inclusive) (permitted to ride work/mock race).

RE: ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “BELIEVER” (DRAWN-10)_IN RACE NO.194 – THE JIMMY UMRIGAR PLATE RUN ON 11TH OCTOBER, 2015 :

The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they questioned Trainer Sanjay Kolse in the above connection. He stated that his instructions to the Jockey were to take a good jump and sit well up in a striking position and to do his best in the straight, however, the Jockey was not able to sit well up as instructed. He added that after the race the Jockey had reported that after about two furlongs from the start, the filly had hit a wrong spot on the track and stumbled and thereafter she has come on to finish second. The trainer also brought to the notice that the next two days after the race the filly was sore, as such, she was x-rayed and found to have chipped her left knee and was subsequently operated for the same.

On reviewing the race, it was confirmed that the filly had indeed stumbled about two furlongs from the start and keeping in mind that she had chipped her knee, no action was initiated in the matter.
