RACE DAY REPORTS

RAILS WERE PLACED 5 METRES AWAY FROM  ITS ORIGINAL POINT FROM 1600 METRES (MILE CHUTE) TO 1200 METRES, 3 METRES WIDE AT 1000 METRES AND THEREAFTER AT THE ORIGINAL POINT UP TO THE WINNING POST.

RACE NO.1 – THE WELCOME PLATE: (About) 1200 Metres – Runners - 8

WAR PRINCESS (App.Parbat Singh) was reluctant to be stalled. Trainer Himmat Singh has been asked to take remedial measures before next accepting to race the mare.

At the start, ZAFIRAH (Dashrath Singh, dr.3) was observed to have shifted out on to GYAHANA (App.Vishal, dr.4) and at the same point, WAR PRINCESS (App.Parbat Singh, dr.7) shifted in on to TERRIFIC (App.Jaykumar, dr.6) who in turn went on to MOROCCAN (App.R. Ajinkya, dr.5) thereby bumping and inconveniencing the latter.

An objection was lodged by App.R.Ajinkya,  rider of MOROCCAN (Placed Second) against GYAHANA (App.Vishal, Placed First). The reason being,  GYAHANA came on to him before the Red Marker and bumped his horse who got unbalanced and unsettled and lost position. Thereafter, he brushed his horse and used him in the early part because of which he lost the race by a neck.

After considering the submissions made by the Jockeys concerned, in conjunction with that of the Stipendiary Stewards  and relying on their judgment, the Stewards decided to over-rule the objection.

After the race, App. Bhawani Singh (HERE I AM) reported that his mount was hanging in. Trainer Subhag Singh has been advised to take remedial measures before next accepting to race the gelding.

Tr.D.J.Surti was questioned regarding the performance of his charge GYAHANA in this race as  compared to her previous runs during the Pune Meeting 2015.  The Trainer stated that in the last two runs in Pune i.e. Race No.193 and Race No.225 he was of the opinion that the filly had a fair chance and he put up Jockey Neeraj Rawal who had requested for the ride, however the filly performed poorly since possibly she did not enjoy the Track conditions. He also pointed out that the filly probably likes the Mumbai track since she had run a good race last Mumbai Season. In the race in question the filly was carrying bottom weight and in addition he claimed 5 kg. allowance, which may have worked in her favour. The Stipendiary Stewards were not entirely satisfied with the explanation tendered by the Trainer, however, since the filly was at longer odds and there was negligible betting, no action was initiated against the Trainer beyond cautioning him to be more careful in the future.

The Stipendiary Stewards have initiated an enquiry into the running and riding of MOROCCAN and a report will be submitted shortly.

The Sr.V.O. reported that HERE I AM was examined at the stables in the morning on 20/11/2015 and found to be sore by the left fore leg. Also, the gelding had an abrasion at the left hind fetlock. The gelding has to be passed fit by the Club’s V.O. before next accepting to race.

After the race, GYAHANA was observed to have lost its left hind plate. MOROCCAN and WAR PRINCESS were found to be sound.

RACE NO.2 – THE MATHRADAS GOCULDAS TROPHY : (About) 1400 Metres – Runners - 4

Jockey Colm O’ Donoghue (PHOENIX TIGER) was observed to have dismounted soon after the race before being led in. On questioning, the Jockey stated that after pulling up his mount was fractious and as a precautionary measure, he had dismounted. The explanation was noted.

After the race, OKAVANGO was found to be sound.

RACE NO.3  – THE KIARA PLATE : (About) 1600 Metres – Runners – 7

Soon after the start, TOP BRACKET (A.Sandesh, dr.4) shifted in on to CARIBBEAN LEGEND (Shrikant Kamble, dr.3) who in turn went on to OREIUS (Kishore Kadam, dr.2). Jockey A.Sandesh has been cautioned.

Approaching the Red Marker, it was observed that NIFTY (P.Trevor, dr. 6) and AWESOME KNIGHT (C.S.Jodha, dr.5) had jostled.

Approaching 1400 metres, NIFTY (P.Trevor) shifted in on to AWESOME KNIGHT (C.S.Jodha) who in turn went on to TOP BRACKET (A.Sandesh). On questioning, Jockey P.Trevor stated that the pace was slow and in his effort to settle his mount, the filly had shifted in. The explanation was noted.

Passing 400 Metres AWESOME KNIGHT (C.S.Jodha)  shifted in on to OREIUS (Kishore Kadam) thereby tightening the latter. Jockey C.S.Jodha has been cautioned.

RACE NO.4 – THE ETNA PLATE : (About) 1400 Metres – Runners -  9

At the request of Trainer Faisal A.Abbas, JEANNINE was examined at 1830 hours on 18/11/2015 and was found to be sore by the right fore leg and having caped elbow on the right side which is of recent origin. As such, the filly was certified unfit to race and was withdrawn on Veterinary grounds. The filly has to be passed fit by the Club’s VO before next accepting to race.

At the start, DESERT RAGE (App.R.Ajinkya, dr.5) shifted in and went across SAIL PAST (J.Chinoy, dr.4).

Soon after the start, FEARLESS NADIA (P.Kamlesh, dr. 6) shifted in on to SAIL PAST (J. Chinoy dr. 4) and thereafter shifted out on to B FIFTY TWO (Dashrath Singh, dr.8). Jockey P.Kamlesh has been cautioned.

Trainer P. Shroff  was questioned regarding the running of his charge ANGELIC ARIA (P.Trevor). He opined that the filly had run a poor race and after the race the Jockey had reported that the filly was tentative while galloping along the inside. He said that he would have the filly examined and report his findings.

After the race, STAR OF BABYLON, SAIL PAST and ANGELIC ARIA were found to be sound. SAIL PAST had lost its left fore plate.

RACE NO.5 – THE SIR CHARLES FORBES TROPHY: (About) 1200 Metres – Runners - 8

VICTORIA HARBOUR (Colm O’Donoghue) was reluctant to be stalled. Trainer Dallas Todywalla has been asked to give the filly more gate practice and show her to the satisfaction of the Starter at morning starting trials, before next accepting to race.

Soon after the start, SUNNY SEA (P.S.Chouhan, dr.4) shifted out and INCENTIO (J.Chinoy, dr.6) shifted in, thereby inconveniencing BRAHMACHARI (Dashrath Singh, dr.5).

Approaching 1000 meters, SUNNY SEA (P.S.Chouhan) was observed to have dropped back.

Approaching the 100 metres marker, CLASSIC MOMENT (App.R.Vaibhav) shifted in on to SPIDER MAN (C.S.Jodha) tightening him for room, as a result, SPIDER MAN shifted in and made contact with STRATEGIC MOVE (A. Sandesh).

An enquiry has been initiated into the running and riding of VICTORIA HARBOUR and a report will be submitted shortly.

After the race, STRATEGIC MOVE was observed to have broken a blood vessel and is not to race for the stipulated ban period of four weeks. The gelding has to be passed fit by the Club’s V.O. before next accepting to race.

After the race, VICTORIA HARBOUR, INCENTIO and BRAHMACHARI were found to be sound.

RACE NO.6 – THE J V SHUKLA – ASHWAMITRA TROPHY: (About) 1000 Metres – Runners - 8

In the last 100 metres, ARIZONA SUN (S.Zervan) shifted out. As the Jockey had steadied his mount, no action has been initiated.

An objection was lodged by Jockey P.Trevor,  rider of HARVEY (Placed Second) against ARIZONA SUN (S.Zervan, Placed First). The reason being, in the last 150 metres, ARIZONA SUN veered out and came right in front of his horse due to which his horse shied and took little time to get into stride. His horse was the fastest finishing at the end and the verdict being a short-head, this had cost him the race.

After considering the submissions made by the Jockeys concerned, in conjunction with that of the Stipendiary Stewards  and relying on their judgment, the Stewards decided to over-rule the objection.

An enquiry has been initiated into the running and riding of ENTHRALLING and a report will be submitted shortly.

After the race, ZADORA was found to be sound, but having a gum injury,

RACE NO.7– THE SEASON’S BEST PLATE : (About) 1200 Metres – Runners -  14

MR FORD (J.Pradeep) was reluctant to be stalled. Tr.Faisal A.Abbas has been asked to give the gelding more gate practice and show him to the satisfaction of the Starter at morning starting trials, before next accepting to race.

MY FREEDOM (Amyn Merchant) took an awkward fly jump, losing about 2 lengths at the start.

At the start, ORLA (S.Zervan, dr.14) shifted in on to MARCUS AURELIUS (App.Bhawani Singh, dr.13).

ROYAL SAPPHIRE (N.S.Parmar, dr.12) shifted in under urgings before passing the Red Marker.  Jockey N.S.Parmar was fined Rs.2000/-.

Tr.Faisal A.Abbas and Jockey J.Pradeep were questioned regarding the running and riding of MR FORD.  The Jockey stated that his instructions were to take a good jump and sit wherever he was comfortable, come into the straight and do his best. Trainer Faisal A.Abbas confirmed the instructions.  Jockey J.Pradeep stated that the horse was not very quick at the start so he gave him bit of a chance to settle down and on entering the straight, when he used the whip once on the left, the horse ran in, however, as he was riding after a long time, he could not react to it and could not control the horse at that moment. He said that he had informed the Trainer after the race that the horse is very immature and to check his mouth.

Not being satisfied with the explanation tendered by Jockey J.Pradeep, he has been asked to practice race riding in Mock Races before next accepting a ride. Trainer Faisal A.Abbas has been cautioned for declaring a Jockey who himself claims he is out of practice.

ADDITIONAL REPORTS:

RE: APPEAL FROM JOCKEY SURAJ NARREDU AGAINST THE DECISION OF THE STEWARDS OF THE CLUB IN RESPECT OF SUSPENSION OF HIS JOCKEY’S LICENSE FOR 25TH OCTOBER 2015 FOR ILL-JUDGED RIDING AND NOT FOLLOWING TRAINER’S INSTRUCTIONS ON HIS MOUNT “REMEMBER ME” – IN RACE NO 135 -THE MYSORE RACE CLUB TROPHY, RUN ON 19TH SEPTEMBER 2015 AT THE PUNE RACECOURSE:

The Board of Appeal having studied all documents and papers that were submitted and having heard the submissions made by Jockey Suraj Narredu, deliberated on the matter at length and having applied their minds to the entire facts of the case, the Board noted that REMEMBER ME ran over 1600 metres for the first time and that the

Jockey’s intentions were not to go to the front, but apparently, he had fought with the horse for too long in the early and middle stages of the race.

Taking an overall view and not doubting his intentions to win the race, the Board gave Jockey Suraj Narredu the benefit of doubt and decided to allow his Appeal and set aside the punishment given to him by the Stewards of the Club.

RE: APPEAL FROM JOCKEY P.TREVOR AGAINST THE DECISION OF THE STEWARDS OF THE CLUB IN RESPECT OF SUSPENSION OF HIS JOCKEY’S LICENSE FOR 25TH OCTOBER 2015 AND 19TH NOVEMBER 2015 AND A FINE OF RS.10,000/- FOR INJUDICIOUS RIDING ON HIS MOUNT “VICTORY DANCER” – IN RACE NO 137 -THE PROTEUS PLATE (DIV- II) ,RUN ON 19TH SEPTEMBER 2015 AT THE PUNE RACECOURSE:

The Board of Appeal having studied all documents and papers that were submitted and having heard the submissions made by Jockey P.Trevor and his Spokesman, Mr. P.S.Chouhan, deliberated on the matter at length and having applied their minds to the entire facts of the case, the Board noted that filly was still a maiden. The filly stumbled in the last 200 metres and did not stride fluently in the straight and the Jockey was apprehensive of her soundness during the race. The Board accepted the argument that there may have been something wrong with the filly as she was medicated subsequent to her races and was examined by the Club’s Veterinarian after all her races at Pune.

Therefore, the Board decided to allow the Appeal and set aside the punishment given to Jockey P.Trevor by the Stewards of the Club.

SUBJECT :  ENQUIRY INTO THE POSITIVE FINDINGS OF “O-DESMETHYL-VENLAFAXINE” IN THE URINE SAMPLE OF 1) ch f “MAISHA” (WINNER) IN RACE NO.17 – THE MAHARAJA OF MORVI TROPHY RUN ON 23RD NOVEMBER, 2014 & 2) ch f “ARRIVEDERCI” (PLACED THIRD) IN RACE NO.79 – THE N.M.IRANI TROPHY (DIV.II) RUN ON 25TH DECEMBER, 2014 – MATTER REMANDED BACK TO THE STEWARDS OF THE CLUB BY THE BOARD OF APPEAL – DE-NOVO ENQUIRY:

The Stewards of the Club at their meetings held on 17th October, 2015 and thereafter on 29th October, 2015 considered the above matter.

At the outset, in Tr.P.Shroff’s presence, the Stewards congratulated the Sr.Stipendiary Steward and his team for holding a detailed and fair enquiry into his positive findings. Tr.P.Shroff was informed that the Stewards considered all submissions, papers, proceedings, documents and various scientific opinions before them. The Stewards heard him/his Witness Dr.Hasneyn Mirza as also two members from the Expert Panel viz. Prof Tatu and Dr.Karthikeyan. They also gave him the opportunity to cross question Prof Tatu and Dr.Karthikeyan. Having applied their minds to the entire facts and circumstances of the case and all submissions made, the Stewards did not accept his mitigating circumstances and held him vicariously responsible for the positive finding of O-Desmethylvenlaxine in the urine sample of MAISHA and ARRIVEDERCI. Further, the Stewards also held him guilty of not maintaining his log book properly.

However, that being said, taking an overall view and having considered all the submissions made and keeping in mind that the two Members of the Expert Panel viz. Prof Tatu and Dr.Karthikeyan had said that there is a possibility of environmental contamination in this case, the Stewards took a lenient view and decided to club the two positives of MAISHA and ARRIVEDERCI as one offence and to suspend his Trainer’s license for a period of 60 days and a fine of Rs.15,000/- for vicarious liability as per the norms for Class-2 drugs since Rule-XII of the “Medication Control For Horses in Training and Racing”  states “The Trainer is always responsible for the protection and security of the horses in his care. Trainers are warned that they will be held responsible if an examination of a horse results in the finding of any prohibited substances.”

Tr.P.Shroff was informed that the suspension of 30 days and fine of Rs.10,000/- imposed on him by the Stewards of the Club for the positive finding of CAPSAICIN in the urine sample of RAMESSES in Race No 77 run on 21st December 2014 and for which he had not appealed, would stand.

Therefore, his Trainer’s license stands suspended for a total period of 90 days (60 days for MAISHA & ARRIVEDERCI + 30 days for RAMESSES) i.e. w.e.f. 19th November, 2015 to 16th February, 2016 (both days inclusive).

Further, the Stewards decided to fine him a sum of Rs.50,000/- for not maintaining his log book properly.

The Stewards of the Club at their meetings held on 17th October, 2015 and thereafter on 29th October, 2015 considered the above matter.

The Stewards heard Tr.M.K.Jadhav/his witness Mr.Hasmukh Chawda as also two members from the Expert Panel viz. Prof Tatu and Dr.Karthikeyan. They also gave Tr.M.K.Jadhav the opportunity to cross question Prof Tatu and Dr.Karthikeyan. Having applied their minds to the entire facts and circumstances of the case and all submissions made, the Stewards did not accept his mitigating circumstances and held him vicariously responsible for the positive finding of O-Desmethylvenlaxine in the urine sample of his six horses. Further, the Stewards held him grossly negligent in running his horse AME on 12th February, 2015 after having knowledge of the probable cause.

Nevertheless, taking an overall view and taking into account his excellent track record of 44 years with only one infringement and keeping in mind that the two Members of the Expert Panel viz. Prof Tatu and Dr.Karthikeyan had said that there was a possibility of contamination in this case also, even though they had opined differently on the 1st

of April, 2015, the Stewards took a lenient view and without precedent, decided to give him some benefit of doubt and  to club his six positives cases as one offence and to suspend his Trainer’s license for a period of 60 days and a fine of Rs.15,000/- for vicarious liability as per the norms for Class-2 drugs since Rule-XII of the “Medication Control For Horses in Training and Racing”  states “The Trainer is always responsible for the protection and security of the horses in his care. Further, the Stewards decided to fine him a sum of Rs.30,000/- for being grossly negligent in running his horse AME on 12th February, 2015 after having knowledge of the probable cause.

RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “GOLD STREAK” IN RACE NO.206 – THE NITROUS PLATE RUN ON FRIDAY, 16TH OCTOBER, 2015 :

Jockey J.E.Pereira was questioned in the above connection. The video of the race was viewed and when questioned, particularly to his riding efforts in the straight, Jockey J.E.Pereira was apologetic and stated that he should have been more vigorous on his mount.

Since Jockey J.E.Pereira had accepted that he could have been more vigorous on his mount and apologized for the same and also keeping in mind that the filly was at longer odds, the Stipendiary Stewards decided to suspend his Jockey’s license w.e.f. 19th November, 2015 to 22nd November, 2015 (both days inclusive) for incompetent riding (permitted to ride work/mock race).
