RE:ENQUIRY INTO THE COMPARATIVE PERFORMANCE OF “LAURUS PRIDE” IN RACE NO 102 WHERE THE HORSE RAN UNPLACED AS COMPARED TO ITS PREVIOUS RUN IN RACE NO 54 WHERE THE HORSE WAS PLACED 2ND – TRAINER SUBHAG SINGH

When questioned, Trainer Subhag Singh stated that the Instructions to Jockey Amyn Merchant were to go to the front as the horse has performed well when raced in that manner.

The Jockey confirmed the Instructions and added that the horse was not able to go to the front as there were other fast horses in the race and he had no choice but to ride the horse as he found him.

Trainer stated that in its previous run the horse was able to hit the front but for the riding of the Apprentice on that day, the horse would have won the race. To another question he stated that the previous race was of Jockeys without Whip and therefore he had declared an Apprentice and also was able to claim 5 kg allowance. He added that this time the horse has run in higher Class i.e. Class IV.

Whilst noting the explanation of the Trainer,  he has been reminded that he should be careful in future and not fall in a pattern which may be of concern to the Stipendiary Stewards.

RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “ICE ZONE” IN RACE NO.133 – THE P.D.AVASIA TROPHY RUN ON SUNDAY, 18TH JANUARY, 2015 :

The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer H.J.Antia and Jockey Hanumant Singh in the above connection. Trainer Antia said that the horse was drawn-1 and he had instructed the Jockey to jump, sit well and to do his best. He said the horse did not have early pace and the other horses outpaced him. Thereafter, he was racing along the rails and the Jockey should have ridden from the rails. He said that he was fully satisfied with the   Jockey’s riding and thought that the Jockey had made a minor mistake by going out.

Jockey Hanumant Singh confirmed the instructions and added that he was along the rails but the horse was not responding and therefore he pulled the horse out and had done his best.

Having heard the submissions made and viewing the video recording of the race, the Stipendiary Stewards were not satisfied with the explanation tendered by Jockey Hanumant Singh and held him guilty of injudicious riding.  In that, after getting into a good position, he dropped the horse to the last/second last position for no apparent reason and thereafter unnecessarily travelled wide round the bend. Further, he was not vigorous in the straight and when he used the whip twice and gave a back hander, the horse responded but he went feeble again.

However, considering that the horse was at longer odds, the Stipendiary Stewards took a lenient view and decided to suspend his Jockey’s license for 8th February, 2015 for injudicious riding (permitted to ride work/mock race).

Further, the Stipendiary Stewards were also not satisfied with the explanation tendered by Trainer H.J.Antia and fined him a sum of Rs.7,500/- for unsatisfactory running of his charge and he was warned for the future.

RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “OCEANA” IN RACE NO.134 – THE HARRISH MEHRA TROPHY (DIV.I) RUN ON SUNDAY, 18TH JANUARY, 2015 :

The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer S.S.Shah and Jockey Keanen G.Steyn in the above connection. Trainer S.S.Shah stated that he had declared this Jockey on the instructions of the Owner. He said that he was disappointed with the finish of the Jockey, however, the Jockey had reported to him after the race that his whip and reins had got entangled and therefore he could not ride out, therefore, he did not report the matter to the Stipendiary Stewards.  Tr.S.S.Shah said that the Jockey had lost a certain place. if not  win the race.

Jockey Keanen G.Styn stated that he rides in Bangalore and this was his first ride in Mumbai. He said that he was advised by Jockey Colm O’Donoghue to save the horse for the last part. He said that his reins and whip got stuck and immediately after the race he had reported the same to the Stipendiary Stewards.

Jockey Keanen G.Styn was told that the Stipendiary Stewards appreciate all that he had said and agreed that he had reported the matter. However, on reviewing the race, they felt that he took too long to fix the problem and due to this incident, he had lost a certain place as he did not ride out for the better part of the last furlong. The Jockey reiterated that he had done his best and the incident was accidental.

Having heard the submissions made and viewing the video recording of the race, the Stipendiary Stewards were not satisfied with the explanation tendered by Jockey Keanen G.Steyn  and held him guilty of incompetent riding.

However, keeping in mind that this was his first ride in Mumbai, they took a lenient view in the matter and decided to fine him a sum of Rs.10,000/-.
