RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “FLAMING ARROW” IN RACE NO.3 – THE CUPID PLATE (DIV.II) RUN ON THURSDAY, 24TH JULY, 2008 :

The Stewards at their meeting held on Saturday, 2nd August, 2008 considered the evidence obtained by the Stipendiary Stewards in the above enquiry. They interviewed Trainer C.D.Katrak and Jockey Amyn Merchant and having heard the submissions made and viewing the video recording of Race No.3,  the Stewards were not satisfied with the explanation tendered by Jockey Amyn Merchant. However, keeping in mind the submissions of the Trainer that FLAMING ARROW is a difficult horse to ride, the Stewards decided to give Jockey Amyn Merchant the benefit of doubt for the charge of “not permitting his mount to run on its merits” and held him guilty of “unsatisfactory riding” on his mount FLAMING ARROW in the above race.  In that, negotiating the final bend he unnecessarily pushed the horse and traveled wide round the bend and thereafter when his horse started drifting out under use of the whip, he made no effort whatsoever to correct the horse or change his whip hand but continued to use the whip with the right hand thereby allowing the horse to drift out further thereby losing valuable ground, which may have cost him the race. The Stewards did not accept his explanation that he did not change his whip hand because he felt that the horse may turn around since the horse had not shown this behaviour in his previous race in Mumbai. Also, he did not give this explanation before the Stipendiary Stewards at the preliminary enquiry and the Stewards held the view that this was an afterthought.

The Stewards noted that there was a drift in the odds on FLAMING ARROW. They also considered Jockey Amyn Merchant’s recent past record.

However, taking an overall view the Stewards took a lenient view in the matter and decided to suspend his Jockey’s license w.e.f. 17th August, 2008 to 13th September, 2008 (both days inclusive) and he was severely warned for the future.

(permitted to ride work/mock race)

RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “MUSTANG SALLY” IN RACE NO.11 – THE CERTAINTY PLATE (DIV.I) RUN ON FRIDAY, 25TH JULY, 2008 :

The Stewards at their meeting held on Saturday, 2nd August, 2008 considered the evidence obtained by the Stipendiary Stewards in the above enquiry. They interviewed Trainer Anil Kumar and Jockey S.S.Baria and having heard the submissions made and viewing the video recording of Race No.11,  the Stewards were not satisfied with the explanation tendered by Jockey S.S.Baria. However, keeping in mind the submissions of the Trainer, the Stewards decided to give Jockey S.S.Baria the benefit of the doubt for the charge of “unsatisfactory riding” and held him guilty of injudicious riding on MUSTANG SALLY in the above race. In that, conceding that his instructions were to make his move from the outside in the straight, however, passing the 400 metres there was a wide open gap on the inside of FIREY FUTURE which the jockey did not take and made his move from the outside of FIREY FUTURE and by doing so, he traveled very wide so much so that the mare raced on the main track, thus losing valuable ground, which may have cost him the race. The Trainer also concurred with the view that the jockey should have taken the gap passing the 400 metres.

The Stewards also considered Jockey S.S.Baria’s recent past record.

However, taking an overall view, the Stewards took a lenient view in the matter and decided to suspend his Jockey’s license w.e.f. 17th August, 2008 to 23rd August, 2008 (both days inclusive) and he was severely warned for the future. (permitted to ride work/mock race).

Further, the Stewards were also not satisfied with the explanation tendered by Trainer Anil Kumar and decided to warn him to be more explicit in his instructions to Jockeys in the future.

RE : RACE NO.17 – THE COLUMBIA PLATE RUN ON FRIDAY, 25TH JULY, 2008 – JOCKEY WAYNE SMITH, RIDER OF “RADIATING” – REPORTED TO THE STEWARDS FOR CARELESS RIDING :

The Stewards at their meeting held on Saturday, 2nd August, 2008 interviewed Jockey Wayne Smith in the above connection and having heard the submissions made and viewing the video recording of Race No.17,  the Stewards were not satisfied with the explanation tendered by him and held him guilty of careless riding on his mount RADIATING. In that, he shifted in near the 800 metres and made contact with FAIR TACTICS (K.P.G.Appu) who had to be checked and lost position and thereafter he again shifted in and took the ground of FAIR TACTICS.

The Stewards noted that Jockey Wayne Smith’s license already stood suspended under B.T.C. Ltd. Rules of Racing, up to and inclusive of 28th August, 2008. Therefore, the Stewards decided to suspend his Jockey’s license w.e.f. 29th August, 2008 to 30th August, 2008 (both days inclusive) for careless riding on his mount RADIATING in Race No.17. Further, he was informed that the Stewards took a lenient view in the matter on this occasion and he was warned to be more careful in the future. (permitted to ride work/mock race).
