RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “FLASHING FLAME” IN RACE NO.259 – THE P.R.MEHTA TROPHY RUN ON 20TH MARCH, 2008 :

The Stewards of the Club at their meeting held on Sunday, 6th April, 2008 considered the report of the Stipendiary Stewards and interviewed Trainer Narendra Lagad and Jockey Nadeem Alam. Having heard their submissions and viewing the video recording of Race No.259, the Stewards were not satisfied with the explanation tendered by Jockey Nadeem Alam. However, they decided to give him the benefit of the doubt for the charge of “not permitting his mount to run on its merits” but held him guilty of “unsatisfactory riding on his mount FLASHING FLAME in Race No.259. In that, even giving him the benefit of the doubt for his riding at the start and in the early part of the race, however, on entering the straight when he used the whip with the right hand and pulled the horse out, the horse responded well. Instead of giving a couple of more reminders and continuing to ride the horse out at that stage,  for no apparent reason he put his whip down and shifted in and stayed behind the horse in front. Thereafter, when he again pulled his horse out and the horse was responding, for no apparent reason he switched the whip to his left hand and in so doing, unbalanced the horse and lost ground. Lastly, when his horse was again responding well in the last 100 metres,  he again put his whip down in the last 50 metres and did not ride out vigorously with rhythm. The Stewards held the view that this poor handling of the horse had certainly cost him the race, the verdict being a neck.

Taking an overall view and considering Jockey Nadeem Alam’s past clean record and keeping in mind that he is a 3.5 kgs. allowance Jockey, the Stewards took a lenient view in the matter and decided to suspend his Jockey’s license w.e.f. 21st April, 2008 till 27th April, 2008. Thereafter, should he apply for a Jockey’s license for the Season 2008/09 the same will be granted to him, however, his license shall stand suspended w.e.f. 24th July, 2008 to 10th August, 2008 (both days inclusive). Further, he was cautioned for the future.
